Paul Kallai the Hungarian Champion jockey who in the 60's rode with some succes in Canada and N.J. died here yesterday at the age 73. He was still riding 4-5 races a race day (1 a week). Last week he suffered a stroke as he was weighing in before the first race. What a way to go for a champion jockey.

Gilbert Cappacetti is about 65 or so. He was riding at Philly but I spotted him at Suffolk the other day.

Hello Doc:

I believe here in the states, the oldest rider that still rides today, is Frank Amonte. He just turned 71 and if he wins a race this yea,r he will be the only jockey in the United States to win at the age of 71. The other rider to win at the age of 70 besides Frank Amonte would be Willie Clark.

Best regards,
Joe

Was Willie Clark the guy who rode at Charlestown?

I think R.A. "Cowboy" Jones was the oldest "winning" jockey, but I could be wrong.

Many moons ago I walked hots for my uncle during the summer holidays. ( a public school kid walking 1,000 lb. racehorses? ). He rode a jock who used to hang around the barn. Alan Cuthbertson is the name. A few years ago I saw his name in the result charts. I thought maybe it was a fluke or perhaps a son. Nope! Forty years later, the guy is still bouncing around in a saddle. He's 58 now. Not really old ... unless you wind up under a horse.

The guy is the leading rider at Assiniboia Downs. It's not Saratoga but he's still booting them home.

Kallai was one tough dude who also was a boxer, as I recall. Unfortunately, he was involved in some shenanigans in a race in New Jersey (Atlantic City?) and fled the country to Canada and thence to Hungary.

Kallai and a bunch of other jockeys (Jesus Guadalupe was one) were all convicted in 1976 of fixing races in a six-month period, from mid 1974 to 1975, at Garden State Park. Yes, they were involved in a great bit of shenanagains, I'd say ... fixing mostly trifecta races.
