I just bought a cheap 80 meg Seagate external hard disk to backup my laptop.

Laptop making noises, can anybody tell me what a good backup program is?

I tried the Microsoft program, and it crashes after 6 megs, I don't know what the deal with it is, poor design.

certainly i can't tell , but is the fan making the noise?

or your cd drive?

is that a new back up?

I don't know what is making the noise, could be both.

Big'

casper sounds good, but you don't want your disk cd drive to be at fault for the noise.

nor do you want the fan to go south on you.

you should be able to tell what makes the noise.

I purchased Casper a few years ago....it's a quality product that did the job right the first time around....

I've been using the Backup utility that is part of XP Pro for 4+ years backing up several computers to a USB Hard Drive (Buslink) connected to one of my desktop machines. Sometimes I do full backups and sometimes selective backups. No problems with the backups either direct or over the network (machine that the USB drive is connected to is a "server" for the backup program for network backups).

Have you tried running a fix-disk (ie. Norton) program on your hard drive that you're trying to backup?

Just out of curiousity -- how much data are you backing up here?

Also, this might be a stupid question, but what kind of program does one need to back up?

I back up to flash key/thumb drive and have never really had any problems. I was going to start backing up to a CD but I just never got around to it.
