From the << your govt. is hard at work dept. >>

More than 1,100 Department of Commerce laptop computers were lost, stolen or missing in the last five years,
and some contained personal data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the department said.

Not to worry -

Commerce Sec Carlos Gutierrez was quoted as saying:

"The amount of missing computers is high, but fortunately, the vulnerability for data misuse is low,"

Gov speak for: "cover our keister"

It is really disturbing that so many government and business organiztios have not adopted strict plicies for handling confidential information.
I see no reason whatsoever to ever allow this type of informatin onto a laptop.
I hate to say it, but it looks we need actual laws passed to cover this type of stuff. I uderstand the Navy has strict color match requirements for peanut butter cookies, complete with acceptable and rejectable shades of brown on printed specification sheets. But personal info?

Look at how much terroist info we get off of laptops.

Has no one in authority gotten a wake up call yet?
