You'll always have seen some really flashy and exciting debut performances by 2yo's by this time of year.
These horses typically have very precocious pedigrees, and a few pretty talented and physically unsound influences in both the sire lines and the female family of the pedigree.
Horses like Birdstone ('03) Bellamy Road ('04) and Discreet Cat ('05) were the big-time debuting eye catchers of the last couple of years, in the East.
There are two such horses from the East so far this year, and neither one of them really fit the profile of the kind of horse you expect to explode in a debut race.
* Tiz Wonderful won a Saratoga MSW race by 12.5 lengths going 6.5 furlongs, with a 99 Beyer figure on Sep 2nd. His final time was 1.71 seconds faster than a runaway winner in the other split division of his MSW heat. This is a VERY muscular Ridgeling from the Blasi/Assmussen barn. He's a son of Tiznow, who, as a sire, was just 2-for-32 with first time starters from his debuting crop last year. A crop that included Eclipse Champion Folklore. Tiznow himself ran off-the-board in a very weak showing against Cal Bred Maidens in his debut. Later on in the season he would win the Breeders Cup Classic. Tiznow's sire Cee's Tizzy is a moderate 8% with debuters, and shows a big loss on the betting dollar. It is really alarming to see a horse by Tiznow win a debut like that! The mother of this horse was 3-for-13 on the track, and is kin to a pair of stakes winners. The female family is of above average quality, and is all Ogden Phipps mares from 3 generations back.
* Nobiz Like Shobiz won his debut by nearly 11 lengths at Belmont Park last Saturday. He is by an 8% debut sire named Albert the Great who ran very poorly in his first couple races. ATG is a son of Go For Gin, who won the KY Derby, but is a laughable 3-for-179 (2% wins) with first time starters. This horse is trained by Barclay Tagg. Over the past few years, he's had only two real eye-catching debut winners that I can think of. One is named Funny Cide and the other is Showing Up. Both of them kept moving forward. Although this is probably very trivial...I might as well as mention that this horse is from a tail-female line that once represtened a GREAT dynasty in American racing. But, It has since fizzled out badly. Maybe he can rekindle the old glory.
His 9th dam is the legendary producer Balancoire. She was a stake horse in France in the 1910's. She was imported to America as a broodmare prospect after her career was over. Some of the absolute greatest warriors of the last century were produced through her. They include such horses as the legendary Equipoise and Seabiscuit. The former was known as "The Chocolate Soldier" and overcame horrible foot problems, while winning championships in four different seasons. A best selling book was written about the latter. Both horses are obviously in the Hall Of Fame. Other notable warriors include, the wildly popular Quicken Tree, who was a multiple major stakes winner five years in a row, won the Santa Anita Handicap at age 7, and is buried at Santa Anita. Also included is Determine (who won 16 stake races including the Ky Derby in just three years of racing) as well as Intentionally (who was a multiple stakes winner every year from age 2-to-6)
Balancoire is the dam of a Wood Memorial winner. 2nd Dam of Equipoise. 3rd Dam of Seabiscuit. 5th dam of both Quicken Tree and Determine. And 6th dam of triple tiara winner Mom's Command.
At one time, she might have been viewed as a rival to the legendary producer La Troienne. (who also was imported from France) However, with the exception of $3 million earner Peace Rules, she hasn't had a single decent horse trace back to her in over 20 years. Maybe this horse can change that.
Anyway, it's good to see some nice debut explosiveness from a pair of unusal suspects. Maybe these two will keep it together physically...who knows.
