Son of Storm Cat Hits $8.2 Million at Keeneland
by Leslie Deckard

Bloodstock agent John Ferguson outlasted Demi O'Byrne and Coolmore owner John Magnier to secure an $8.2 million son of Storm Cat (http://www.stallionregister.com/sr_sire_page.asp?refno=935962&origin=BHonline&result=1) to top the first day of the 2006 Keeneland September yearling sale Monday.
The strapping dark bay or brown colt is the first foal out of grade I winner Awesome Humor (by Distorted Humor (http://www.stallionregister.com/sr_sire_page.asp?refno=1396750&origin=BHonline&result=1)) and was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Bill Casner and Kenny Troutt's WinStar Farm bred the colt in Kentucky.
"We have seen this colt throughout the year, and he's been an exceptional individual," Ferguson said. "When he came here, it became apparent he is the one of the best Storm Cat's Sheikh Mohammed has ever seen and you add that to the fact he is out of a young group I winning mare and that becomes a very exciting prospect."

The horse will be running down hill all the time. Will have an advantage over all the other horses.

I don't follow the sales much (okay, at all) but I am curious. Have any of these mega-priced horses ever had great success on the track?
Thanks, Cato

*sidenote
Hadn't realized but snooping around found that insurance for such purchases usually cover mortality and theft. About 90% of equine insurance is for those specific coverages.
As they get older other products are prospective foal policies, which insures that the mare carries a foal for the full term and through a predetermined time after its birth.
For those just retired there's First Season coverage which insures against a stallion achieving less than a 60% fertility rate in its first breeding season.

I think you'll be able to add The Green Monkey to this list pretty soon. I've heard he doesn't work well at all on dirt and they're hoping he's better on grass. You'd think for $16 mil he'd be a champ on anything.

What about that 9 second furlong he ran? That's gotta be good enough to win some dirt races at Los Alamitos :D

Yeah, that would be about it. Supposedly he hurt his ass because his dirt action isn't very good. He might be able to go a solid 330 yds.
Anyone hear anything on when he's going to run? Pletcher isn't saying anything to anyone.

That's right. The hits are huge. It's not realistic by any sense but I remember a few years ago bloodstock agent Robert Fox did an interesting piece. It was basically how you would have done had you bought the most expensive yearling every year for the past 30 or so years. I don't remember the specifics, but there several big horses in there. With the syndications, you were talking about massive dollars.

Pioneering has to be the best value out there. He's a 1/2 to Storm Cat, who stands for $500K and Pioneering stands for $10K. The Pioneerings seem to be able to run on anything, but are especially good on off tracks.

A few of them wind up in regional markets. I think Kipling so for several millions and now stands in Oklahoma for $1500. Authetitcate sold for 3.3 million, never ran and now stands in Texas for $3000.

I wish I had the data handy, but the majority of recent Kentucky Derby winners were not million dollar purchases at the sales... very interesting.
Well---you have about 35,000 foals in a crop. How many sell for seven figures at yearling sales? Even in a hot market, I think you'd still be in the low-to-mid double digits. About 0.01% of horses from a given crop go on to sell for seven figures...so, it shouldn't be that surprising that more don't win the Ky Derby.
Here are some recent Derby winners and what they fetched. Homebred just means that the horse was kept for racing by those who bred him. Basically, those horses never sold at auction. I'll also show what the mothers sold for, if they were offered at auction before racing.
2006- Barbaro (homebred) The dam of Barbaro: La Ville Rouge (sold twice at auction. Brought $42,000 at KEE Sep 1997 as a yearling. Brought $130,000 at OBS March 2yo sale.) as a horse she was 6-for-25 and four times Graded Stakes Placed.
2005- Giacomo (homebred) The dam of Giacomo: Set Them Free (sold twice at auction. She brought $34,000 as a yearling and $45,000 at a Feb 2yo in training sale.) She was 5-for-12 with four stakes wins as a racer
2004- Smarty Jones (homebred) The dam of SJ: I'll Get Along (sold for $40,000 at KEE Sep as a yearling) She was 12-for-39 with two stake wins as a racer.
2003- Funny Cide ($22,000 AUG yearling) His homebred dam was 2-for-26 and made 26K. She was kin to four stakes horses though.
2002- War Emblem ($20,000 KEE SEP yearling) Homebred dam was 5-for-16 and made 89K as a racer.
2001- Monarchos ($170,000 Fasig Tipton Select 2yo in training sale buy) Homebred dam was 18-3-7-3 and made $87K
2000- Fusaichi Pegasus ($4,000,000 Kee July Yearling. Sales topper. On the cover of Bloodhorse magazine a week later.) Dam was 2-1-1-0 and Stakes placed as a race. She was kin to Ky Derby favorite Deamons Begone and Preakness winner Pine Bluff.
1999- Charismatic (didnt sell) His dam also didn't sell, was 0-for-2 as a racer. But, besides Charismatic, she also produced major stakes horses Millennium Wind and Tossofthecoin.
1998- Real Quiet ($17,000 KEE Sep yearling) Dam was 3-for-21 and made 32K. Never sold at auction.
1997- Silver Charm (sold twice. $16,500 at OBS Aug yearling sale. Than for $100,000 at OBS April 2yo in training sale.) His dam was 11-for-63 and made 154K.
There is the last 10 years. I don't feel like typing anymore. Anyway, there are no real worthwhile trends that I see

His bloodlines aren't all that overpowering. He sold for $425,000 as a yearling. And only went for $16,000,000 at the Fasig Tipton Select 2yo in training sale because he worked a furlong in razor sharp 9 4/5th seconds...breaking the record of 10 flat jointly held by a few horses, including eventual Ky Derby 2nd place finisher Lion Heart who worked a sales best 10 flat at that 2003 sale.
The Green Monkey isn't worth much at all if he doesn't prove himself on the track. He's a son of Forestry. There is a son of Forestry one year older named Discreet Cat. While they both have the same sire--DC's female side of the pedigree is MUCH MUCH better. DC has also proven himself on the track...at least a lot more than TGM has.
If you were a breeder...and really wanted to breed to a son of Forestry, knowing what you know right now, would you go to Discreet Cat or TGM?

It's on my CD that BRIS puts out each year.
The thing costs $399.
Unless you are a very serious gambler who insists on betting baby races and early season 2yo grass races, or you are in the breeding business, it's probably not worth that kind of money.
It is a pretty neat CD though.
