One good thing about Illegal Offshore Bookmakers is competition. They make the legal bet takers in the U.S. improve their product.

I just read an article about a bar in Virginia (Chevy's) that now offers account based wagering through TVG to their patrons. They have placed large screen TVs around the bar and people can bet via the TV remote control, print out programs and pps at a kiosk for a small fee and they even have a hot-line phone set up directly to TVG for opening up new accounts.

This is the kind of service Illegal Offshore Bookmakers can't easily compete against.

Unfortunately, some Virginia politicians aren't happy about the loophole that allows bars to setup as OTBs, but as usual, the politicians make a bigger deal out of this than the politician's constituents.

Why do you call them illegal? Which laws are they breaking?

Good point. My bad -- a poor choice of words. Unlicensed Offshore Bookmakers is a better way of putting it. By that I mean unlicensed by U.S. governing authorities -- whoever they may be.

They are breaking no laws that I know of. So why was that guy from that offshore bookmaking operation arrested when he entered the U.S. if he was breaking no laws? Why did they shut their site down? Someone feels they are breaking laws. Not me, but someone in the Justice Dept.

If unlicensed bookmakers were located on U.S. soil then they would be illegal. But since they are offshore they are probably legal in their jurisdictions. In fact, if they are legal in their jurisdictions then they are probably licensed in their jurisdictions. I suppose it possible to be legal, but not licensed. But no need to get into semantics.

So when I say unlicensed, I mean unlicensed by U.S. tracks. Although, I don't know why a U.S. track could not grant an unlicensed offshore bookmaker a license if they chose to do so.

If I owned a U.S. track, I would license my product to an offshore bookmaker. Why not?

Why is the government so eager to allow businesses to be part of a global economy but won't allow gamblers to do the same thing?

Law concering wagering in general are absurd at best.
Scew them.

Tom, I agree.

What ever happened to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? And give me liberty or give me death?

Politicians, hear this -- STAY OUT OF MY LIFE. IT IS TIME YOU WORRY MORE ABOUT ILLEGALS GETTING ACROSS OUR BORDERS THAN HOW I SPEND MY ENTERTAINMENT DOLLARS. BIN LADEN IS STILL ON THE LOOSE. GO DO SOMETHING USEFUL AND FIND HIM OR GO FIGHT TERRORISM. STOP WASTING TAXPAYER DOLLARS.

There are now state laws that make it a crime in some places for a U.S. citizen to place a bet through an "unlicensed bookmaker." I'm pretty sure one of the states that just passed the law is Washington. I seem to recall Connecticut being the other but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

I'm not taking a stance one way or the other, but it is only a matter of time before some unfortunate shmucks are prosecuted for this.

This whole online gambling thing is absurd. Just to be safe, I don't bet online when I'm at home in Connecticut because our attorney general in his infinite wisdom -- or infinite desire for power -- has deemed it illegal.

To my knowledge the only guy ever arrested for betting online was the car salesman from the Dakotas who bet on sports. Hundreds of thousands of people are probably playing poker online right now. Will any of them ever be arrested... probably not.

Instead of the bureaucrats of this country embracing the technology they fear it.

Or what about Napster. The music industry feared it. So they arrested a few teenagers to make a point about the evils of downloading. The idiots should have embraced the technology. Finally, Apple did and is making millions if not more by offering downloads for the iPods.

I may not bet online anymore. But it would be incredibly easy to get a friend overseas to set up an account for me. I could send in my bets through a server located overseas. Best of all there would be no taxes. I'm sure a lot of people will do that. So the U.S. will lose out on control of the wagering and potential tax revenue because of the incredible stupidity of anti-gambling crusaders and politicians who don't know their ass from a whole in the ground.

So since I have nothing to fear from them since I don't bet online I am going to rip them a new one every chance I get. I don't like my rights to be infringed upon by idiots who think that just because they got elected to some two-bit office they can wield power over me.

So when I am someplace that it is legal to bet I will bet with both hands. And when I make a profit in a place that does not tax gambling income do you think I will report it? Well, let some bureaucrat prove that I made a profit and try to tax me. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Here is a symbol that represents my ass ===>>> } <<<===this emoticon is a symbol for all anti-gambling politicians

What we need to encourage is to have more state governments get into the gambling business. Notice that state-government owned and/or regulated gaming is always exempt from the heavy hands of the federal government. And, the states' participation is marked by their highly-efficient operations that return 50% of players' bets in lottery games; and, 80% (give or take) of players' bets in horse racing.

Of course, the lotteries would give players a higher return if it wasn't for the fact that the lottery funds are used to benefit our childrens' education. If you don't believe me ask any politician!

I was playing poker on Saturday night and one of the guys took a phone call from his father in law. The Father in law was screaming that his offshore outlet that he plays horses through had just informed him that they were no longer open and all funds were lost. Dear old Dad apparently had 3200 bucks in his account.........I could hear him bitching across the room. The guy we were playing with didn't know the name of the offshore place..........

Anybody know who this could have been?

32 hundred is a lot?

If you are betting 1% of bankroll, that is only $32 bets. You'll never be a part time pro making those sized wagers! :)

Not saying your bankroll shouldn't be higher than $3200 (1% of bankroll strikes me as a tad low, but that's besides the point), but why keep your entire bankroll in one place that is not exactly FDIC -insured?

Hey Guys, I know that this might sound as though it is coming out of the clouds, but, does anyone know of the number (toll free, or otherwise) to the On the wire (Amtote) betting facility? The number that you call in your wagers on... The one that originates from CT.. :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All the BEST!

1-800-4-OTB

When I used them they were the best in the business, in my opinion. Great customer service. Friendly tellers. I recommend them.

I have a big problem with Connecticut though. I reside in CT and the attorney general, Dick Blumenthal, has decreed that CT residents can not make online pari-mutuel wagers. We can have telephone wagering accounts anywhere in the world, as long as we can call in the bets to a live teller or use our phone to punch in bets via touch tone phone. But GOD forbid a CT resident tries to place a bet with the click of a mouse button over the internet. If you do then you're breaking the law.

But at least we can still bet online on the price of oil or corn in the futures market. Phew! I was worried I might lose all ability to gamble online.

I asked his office if it was illegal to use my computer to dial up CT-OTB using Net2Phone phone service over the internet and punch in my bets from the Net2Phone keypad into the CT-OTB touch tone wagering pad. They didn't reply.

Biggest bunch of horseshit I have ever heard come out of an AGs office. Clueless.

So if I can't bet online from CT I won't bet by phone with a CT wagering provider. This probably suits Blumenthal. He didn't want CT-OTB to offer evening races live on Cablevision because he said it would expand gambling in the state.

We have two of the largest casinos in the world and he's worried that a live horse racing show would expand gambling in the state.
What a f___ing joke.

The best part is ... we pay taxes so these people can get paid for the work they do for us. Unf____ing believable.

What a f____ing embarrassment to the voters of this state.

I hope someone from CT reads this and responds.
