surprised Keeneland didn't make that list. Always believed they were one of the most patron friendly venues.

And then Penn National rolls with their 31% takeout on tris and supers
That still amazes me

Still gotta give big props to Sam Houston for the best value in all of horseracing - the 12% takeout rolling pick 3's

What really amazes me is that people can bet into a 25% take, over come the take and make a profit...
The magic of it all!! :bang:

What formula does one use to determine how much lousier (my) handicapping can be to still break even at 12% vs. 31% (I'm serious)?
Should newbies or someone like me who is lousy at exotics try Sam Houston to learn the ropes?

The sum of the booking percentages on a 12% take is 1/(1-.12)= 1.136
(The total book % in a race is the sum 1/(odds+1))
To break even, you have to out-perform the public by 13.6%.Example; Eliminating the take, a 3-1 shot has a book % of 1/(3+1)= .25
With a 12% take the book % is .25 X 1.13 = .2825, which adjust the odds downward to 2.53-1
To break even (2.53 x (.25*1.136) –(1-.2825))= 0..

In a 25 % take, you have to out-perform the public by 33% just to break even..
what an easy game.. ;)

PS, I have to see if Crist covered that point in his book.

THANK YOU! I always figured at 20% average take it was 25% better trhan the crowd; You put out the exact range of numbers for me and it really hit the mark! The numbers suggest the % of outperforming goes up more dramatically as the take goes up.
Now my curiousity is up about European lay bets; and how much betting would be done if a track decided to do a promotion by holding a race in which NO takeout is taken out!

It looks like Retama is 25% on P4 (looking at the pays vs. pool), anyone care to doublecheck?

The DD and P3 do look to be 12% tho

where did you get that? Some of those don't look right.

Wouldn't you think Equibase would have a master list posted somewhere that is kept up to date?
