funny you mention this race...I was about to post asking why the trifecta payout on this race was so low. 4-1....17-1....5-1 only 386!!!!! Two favorites off the ticket. i was livid! i expected at least twice that figure and I felt it could be a signer. Not even close.

I didn't play this race and my thoughts are just based on the charts after the race. First on my Ainslie's exacta and quinella value tabes, I noted that a 4-1 and 17 to 1 exacta should pay $156.
The Race odds
prg # odds
10* 2.75-1
3 3.05-1
6 4.40-1 won
12 5-1
11 6.2-1
4 14.80 -1
8 17.2-1 placed
7 27-1
1 42-1
The favorite and co-favorite were weakly bet and ran up the track. Just for fun, I created a new odds line with the #10 & 3 odds distributed with the rest of the field. In this new odds line the #6 was 5-2 and the #8 was 12-1.
The "correct" exacta payoff for this combination would be $73.60. I.think this is just a case of the exact pool being more accurate than the win pool. :)

i was livid!
Wow... I try to reserve my "livid" moments for those races that I actually lose...

Just looked up the PP on this race. The co-favorite #3 had a morning line of 6-5 and went off at 3 to 1. It's not suprising that it was ignored in the exacta pools. :)

good one! Perhaps dazed and confused would have been a better emotion. ha!

I'm curious why the 6-5 went off at 3-1. Did the M/l maker goof or was there a good reason why people laid off it?
Never mind- off the inner turf and very slow fractions, I had provincetown. WInner well back angled in kicked it on the turn.

It was pouring rain and taken off the turf.

I know house handicapper Eric Donavan had the 6-8 as his 1-2 picks, so I sure that's part of the reason the exacta price was low. When handicapping the race, I noticed a lot of exactas with the 8 were being bet so I took a shot on him. If he would of held on, I would have won the TrackChampion Saratoga contest.

Funny you should mention a short exacta payoff at the Spa. It is not the exception, I'm afraid. This past week, I had a 19/1 over a 5/1 and the exacta returned $136. It's getting to the point where I might move over to the win pool.
