I hope I posted this in the correct section. Figured it would go under handicapping software if you use it for that purpose. If it may be posted in the wrong topic then please move this thread to a more suitable place.

I was messing around with a new software I picked up called Replay A/V. It retails for about $50 if those who care to purchase such things.

I was thinking of things I could try to capture with this new toy. I decided to try some racing sources to see what I could get to record.

Being that I tried it tonight and there was not a whole lot of options to try out I still gave it a whirl.

I was also limited on places I could try it out on. I only have an account at youbet.com ,which is currently suspended due to an incident with the bank(hope to get resolved soon) ,that I get regular video from. My bris and xpressbet accounts both were deactivated from lack of activity.

So I tried this out with the youbet.net free site since it ran the same video streams as the real youbet.com. Also for those who wonder how to get some free video just use youbet.net to get it. You only get about an hour worth a video, but if you create a bunch of accounts there you can basically get video all day long. The only down fall is that they only show a few tracks to view the tote board with at a time. Get around this by using one of the totes like at drf. This is what I have been doing since I have been using off shore while my youbet account is cleared up, works great.

Anyway during my testing period of trying to capture streaming video on youbet.net I was able to record numerous tracks no problem, but some would not record what so ever no matter what I tried.

I dont have an account at racereplays.com but was curious if it would work there. So I tried it out on their preview section which shows the 129th derby. While it ran in the sites window it would not recognize it, but when I clicked to have the video play straight through the real player itself it showed up as being able to record.

I then decided would it record the dania jai-alai stream from onlineracing.tv
I then was interested in if any other streaming feeds from onlineracing.tv worked as well. I know they are just greyhound and jai-alai but this was just testing night.

Here is a recap of all the tracks and places I tried out tonight. Just a small sample but kind of prommising if someone was looking into recording replays from the PC themselves.

I gave up on trying anymore sites tonight. Seems like it would work for replays on racereplays.com. I am not a paying member so I can not verify for certain it would.

I just think this software would be great for someone looking to have a replay database for their own personal use.

Some of the recordings were actually pretty good quality, some appeared to be better than the actual stream while watching it through the youbet video viewer. Some were just as cruddy as what you actually see. I didnt notice any being worse than what was being watched. The racereplays.com would record in .rm or real player. Most of those files were inbtween 3-8MB per race and would download for me in about 40 sec a race, I have a 3MB downstream DSL connection.

Live streaming video would record in an .asf windows media player extention. I was just testing out only downloading a little at a time I was averaging about 1.2-1.5MB for every 40 secs of video. Odd time to use but just happened to be about wherer I cut it off each time. I let one go for one min and one sec and it was 2.26MB.

Granted none of the captured video was DVD or even tape quality, but nothing that was not really watchable either.

I also do not know the complete legality in any of this recording streaming video or capturing replays off websites. I am sure there is something saying you shouldnt do it. I think if you kept it for yourself and didnt distribute the replays for a fee you should be all right. No doubt though it is done so at your own risk.

I just thought I would pass this along. I need to get some other accounts up and running that supply video to test more. Dont know when I will be able to get around to doing that. So maybe if someone picks this software up they can further test it out on other sites that offer streaming and or replays.

Just remember testing I did tonight I was very limited on what I could test it out with. Also tracks I may not have been able to get recording tonight might work with some tinkering as well. It was my first crack at it so I am learning the software as I went tonight.

Hopefully Replay A/V might be usefull for some people out there. Anyone want to see any of the stuff I recorded tonight just PM me on here, or IM me on yahoo messenger or send me an email. I would be glad to send some of the files so you can see what the quality does look like. The files are all small and easy enough to send through messenger or email.

Oh yeah the program is also good for other uses as well. It will record almost anything streaming online, radio etc.

Thanks csper, that's a great review packed with info. I think the
video handicappers are generally very quiet about their methods.

I wonder how many PA posters have already built a video library
they can refer to much like the charts?

Is keeping a free video chart library cost effective versus a sub
service like Race Replays?

Do you think it'd be illegal to snake free live video off of other websites, archive it, and set it up on another website and allow people to fast forward / rewind for free?

a question for the lawyers out there =)

mplayer will let you do such a thing for free.

but only if you can sniff out the rtsp://, mms:// or other video link ... I recommend visiting the website using firefox (http://getfirefox.com), firefox doesn't allow the website to prevent you from viewing the source =)

you lost me with the part about downloading.

plenty of freeware out there that'll allow you to capture video feeds

but

why in the world would anyone resort to relying on video feeds for races

it's all I can do to keep my eyes from popping out their sockets whenever I fire up racereplays ----you can't trip off of online feeds

no matter how fast your connection is, the feed invariably sucks

this goes for monmouth, meadowlands, racereplays, even the hong kong replays which conistently need to respool although their quality is just about the best around

can't beat taping off the TV

can't beat taping off the TV

I agree with this.........if you want to archive via dvd it is pretty easy to get it into a computer nowadays.............hell, with the price of hard drives an external for just this type of archiving is cheap too.

Slightly off topic, but BrisBet has a free video library that goes back 2 years.
