I know, I know, it probably jumped the shark years ago but havent seen it in ages. Watching the opening act right now and it is gawd awful. I mean Miss Afghanistan wearing a G-string is maybe acceptable, but Miss Lebanon coming out with a fake bloody head wound is a little over the top..

this is actually getting interesting, they are down to the final 10. Miss USA actually looks to have an outside shot, she's pretty in a rather California blonde type of way. Only 5'5" but curvy. Miss Swiz. is the most physically attractive, therefore she has no shot. Canada is tall as a Moose.

Japan is very exotic looking and attractive, good shot to win I think. Mexico has home field advantage looks like a porn career is ahead of her but definitely a good shot to win. And Puerto Rico is small but very taut, they might like that look; she has the best muscle tone I think. I guess she's the bud long shot.

THe one black girl left is very pretty. Three other So. American types looks interchangeable.

well so far going about as figured. they are down to 5. The so. americans are out, so is Canada and the black chick. Hey does Pinnacle make book on this sort of thing?

I really think Japan is got the best shot, she speaks four languages, I assumed she did well on the answer the question round and just has a very neat look. SHe's exotic looking, but w/ a friendly smile. Theres some sort of imperfection there, her face is asymetrical but it works, you cant stop looking at her. Puerto Rico is ripped, lighter build, nice physique. Mexico is curvy but somehow her hair is just blah and doesnt do her face justice. Ms. Switzerland is wow! she has that sculpted mouth thing going, looks eastern european. TOo good looking for this..USA still an outside shot, shorter, but she's in heels. Nice smile.

Puerto Rico wins, Japan second. Japan might have blown it with the question/answer round. She talked about men dominating women as one thing she would change. Too edgy for Miss Universe, intelligent: yes. Strong opinion yes. But too edgy. Puerto Rico talked about using life's hurdles to grow stonger; intelligent but not edgy. Better.

It's too bad. Japan's smile is just extraordinary. She has a lazy eye or droopy lid or something but it just makes her face more interesting. The camera viewed her from the side so you couldnt really tell.

USA was just too simpleton in her response: I like to pick up those around me. Sounded like it was rehearsed, although the questions are not known.

P.R. definitely had the ripped body they like...

You could be the Trevor Denman for beauty contests.
I didn't need to watch. Just read your posts.

Do you only do Grade 1's ?
Or do you cover say... the Miss Guacamole Pageant ?

J.P., splendid job!

I think the MRS. America pageant is on next week. Keep us informed, please.

Incidentally, my niece is the stylist for MRS. Mississippi.

What in the world does "jumping the shark" mean?

Dick

Who still uses 60's slang. From Wikipedia:
The phrase specifically arises from a scene in the hit TV comedy series Happy Days (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Days) in which the central character, Arthur "The Fonz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fonz)" Fonzarelli, on water skis, literally jumps over a shark. The scene was written into the show at a point when the viewing ratings were beginning to drop, and it is generally regarded as the creative low-point at which the show finally lost all credibility. A show may continue well after the point when fans feel it has "jumped the shark" but will likely decline in popularity

there's a website, called jump the shark.com that coined the phrase or at least promulgated it. The phrase captures the idea perfectly because at some pt. Happy Days really did change and maybe it was at that moment.

It's usually when some mainstay character does something totally against character that you know something has just changed for the worst.

Like on Good Times when the father left. After that it was just the Jimmie Walker show. Or on MASH, as soon as every show became Radar or Father OReilly save sthe day, or maybe it was when BJ arrived; or maybe when Winchester arrived or Frank left or Col BLake died or Hot LIps got married. Or something. Getting married is often the kiss of death; didnt the characters get married on Moonlighting or something? Either that or Ted McGinley is a recurring guest star.

Or All in the Family, when Edith died, or when the kids left or when Danielle Brisbois arrived, something f'd up happend. Or how about when Mr. Roper left and got replaced by Mr. Limpet on Three's Company? Wow that was bad.

THe site is hilarious with a message board where people argue about when or if a show "jumped the shark." Like some shows never jumped: Friends? Frazier? Cheers?

This picture on the left only begins to explore how breathtaking Miss Japan's face is. From the comments on this board a lot of others thought she should have won, even from Puerto Rico's fans! The samura outfit she wore for the opening which was kinda dopey she even did a chop with the sword...

I would say its safe to say "The Sopranos" jumped the shark a couple years ago.

Nice call on the Bud Longshot.
