Gentlemen, your attention, please.

Light has thrown down the gantlet(sp.?) and challenged the Toester to a one-on-one pick-four contest, ala the Riders Up, only this time at Del Mar, weekends only. While this seemingly would hold little interest for a third party, let me remind you that it can serve a wonderful purpose, twofold, even. Not only can a reader scratch my picks off his 'contenders' list, but also Light's are there as fairly reliable throwouts. Lose/lose for us becomes win/win for you. How great is that? :ThmbUp: :D

Herewith my weekend picks, as I am stuck without computer access tomorrow:

Saturday, races 7-10:

1 ... 2 ... 1,3,5,7 ... 2,3,4,5 = 16

1 ... 4,7,8 ... 7 ... 2,3,4,5 = 12

1 ... 4,7,8 ...1,3,5 ... 4,5 =18

3,5,6,9,10 ... 2,4,7,8 ... 7 ... 4,5 = 40

3,5,6,9,10 ... 2 ... 7 ... 2,3 = 10

3,5,6,9,10 ... 2 ... 1,3,5 ... 4,5 = 30

1,10 ... 2 ... 7 ... 2,3,4,5 (x$8) = 64

1,10 ... 2 ... 7,9 ... 4,5 = 8

1 ... 2 ... 7 ... 4,5 = 2.

Sunday, races 6-9:

1,2 ... 1,8,9,13 ... 4 ... 3,4,9,10,13,14 = 192

1,2 ... 13 ... 4 ... 4 = 8.

Light,

I'm stinking worse than a dirty stable, but I think I hit the three non-Giacomo heats on Saturday. Sorry for being so peripatetic this past weekend, and I'll try to kick your @$$ in a more professional manner, 'kay? Meanwhile, I have what can arguably qualify as a life. Hey icka happen, aw'ight? Giacomo won, so ANYTHING can happen. I'm from the tlg school. Show me another Giacomo win, and I'll believe. Heck, even Supah Blitz came out west and beat some 5-horse fields. It rekindles a guy's belief in ultimate entropy. :ThmbUp:

Saturday, 5 August:

3,4,5,8,9,10 ... 2 ... 7 ... 2,6,9,10 (x $5) = $120;

3,4,5,8,9,10 ... 2 ... 7 ... 2,4,6,9,10 = $30;

1,3,4,5,6,8,9,10 ... 2 ... 7 ... 2,6,9,10 =$32;

3,4,5,8,9,10 ... 2 ... 7 ... 9 (x $2) = $12;

3,4,5,8,9,10 ... 2 ... 7 ... 6 = $6.

Light-On-The-Uptake, I propose a rotisserie league draft, of one player apiece, in the Lebanon Conflict. My choice, in the hope he can get rid of Maliki, or whomever, and install an effectual leader, is Kyle "Hez" Boller, the best since Marc Wilson at overthrowing anything, man or beast.

Your 2 in the 8th finished last. There was another Barbaro angle in the 9th.#4 He finished last too.

Unfortunately I missed the 9th race for the pk4. I was making dinner and watching TVG when that race came up. They had a good analysis of the race,and I realized from their analysis my chances were slim. Art told me several times that those claiming races for older horses are superior to allowance nw1x during certain times of the year. This seems to be that time,because this is the 2nd Dmr pk4 I've missed due to this factor.

Light

Just hit the 4th @Mth. The point is that it was a NW1x Alw. Used what I said here. Only 2 4yo's and the only multiple winners in the field.Obvious which one to choose. Paid $17.

The theory is that good 3yo's should have passed this condition by now. A solid multiple winner older horse seems to have the advantage in these races. But everyone keeps looking at "Class" to mean Alw is stronger than claimers. Not in these situations.

Your 2 in the 8th finished last. There was another Barbaro angle in the 9th.#4 He finished last too.Please elucidate, my photonic phriend: does your "Barbara angle" dictate that the critter in question will suffer insurmountable gate trouble, as befell Company Secret in yesterday's Dmr feature? :confused: Granted, that Chris Paasch filly had Barbarollian issues in emerging from the Puett well behind her rivals. (Note: the late Sir John Barbirolli, longtime conductor of the England's famed Halle Orchestra, was notorious for the plodding tempi at which he played the opening measures of any symphony.)

By the way, that was one tough beat last Sunday, when your--and my--#7 (a Craig Dollase trainee whose name escapes me just now) got pipped at the post after making the lead following what Trevor called "a scintillating move" on the far turn. I risked some serious green on that runner. :mad: :faint: :bang:

Anyway, the "Barbaro angle" notwithstanding, it seems to me that it was C.S.'s awkward beginning that sealed her doom.

Falcon

I didn't have a name for this angle until Barbaro broke his leg on it. To qualify for this elimination angle,the horse must have 2 or more lifetime races. All races must be seperated by around 30 days. The horse must never in his carreer ever run 2 consecutive races within approxametly 3 weeks.

The theory is that the horse wants more time in between races and that's all he or she has ever known. To run the races closer is as unknown as a new distance or surface. Plus I think they are more vulnerable to bouncing in this situation. Company Secret qualified for this angle. Raced June 8,then July 16. Yesterday 20 days later,she finishes last.

The other one was WaKanda in the 9th. Raced April 29, May 28,then wins on July 14. Yesterday,22 days later finishes last. Coincidence? I doubt it.

Bakalite,

If it's too late for 3-y-o's, isn't it even a year later for the 4-y-o's? NW1 and NW2 I almost always narrow down to lightly raced 3-y-o's. Now, an optional claimer is another story. It may feature a horse that passed the condition two years ago, yet remains eligible by virtue of the claiming option. NW3 and that rare bird, NW4 I usually concede to older classballs, provided that pace, form, etc. are not too indecipherable. These races and classified allowances are great for finding "hidden" performances followed by stakes runs the very next race. At good prices, of course.

Hard to figure Declan.Only thing that stands out in his PP's is that when Ellis brought him back off the layoff,he raced for a purse that was well below anything he ever raced for before since his maiden win and he lost! That wasn't the greatest sign.

I found the 7th race interesting with Bartok of Siam. I left him off my ticket intentionally and was surprised he got so much action. I didn't like him cause allthough it looked like he was a big threat late,the numbers from his last races said his closing kick was weak. That was also a state bred race he came out of and was going against open company.

I found the favorite in the last very suspect and left him off my ticket.Ran like Declan. Again a foreboding in his pp's. 2 back wins for fun for 80k,then drops to 50k and wins for fun. That was noteworthy,but when you combine it with the negative change in work pattern,something was up. I saw Gary Stevens commenting on the horse's dismal performance saying he lost cause he was taken to the front.I don't buy that. If he was good enough he would have been game on the front and did like Lava Man.

[Best Rod Serling voice]: “You have entered a world, not of sight and sound or comma-delimited thoroughbred files, but of “mind.” A world where fast-finishing equines stall in the tractor beams of alien spacecraft hovering invisibly above the Del Mar infield … where backers of crop-swatted, stopped-in-their-tracks steeds discover that the stewards’ stand has been empanelled with jurors from the O.J. Simpson trial … a world in which the name of the title character of the Oscar-winning film is pronounced ‘ZHEE-lee.’ :eek:

In tonight’s episode, a grizzled, itinerant carillon tuner clashes with an upstart, on-the-make steeplejack in a battle of wits, will, and something-else-beginning-with-‘w.’… That blind switch, the furlong pole up ahead! You have just entered …

Ho ho, that's ridge. :D

I will take that praise, Drake-onian as it be.

Hey, Light, don't fry up that tofu just yet. You may feel-afel afterward. Or at least a t-ah-ini bit queasy. Memo to Heath's mom, apropos of nothing: Don't Ledger baby grow up to be a cowboy, especially up on "He Lost His Service Game But Immediately Broke Back" Mountain, y'hear? That is all. So much for fast, sober women. On to drugged, slow horses.

BLAH! Even my missing the entry in the feature, which did not affect Aragorn, as he was poat 2 AND program 2, could not spice up a dreadful 131-bucker. Lightasafeather was 3-for-3 going into the nightcap. D'OH!! That pesky Clinton Potts spoiled everything! When interviewed afterward, "Panzen" Potts positively gushed thusly: "M'horse run good ... real good." :jump:

I don't recall such pathetic cards at DelMar as this meet. Our Pk4 yesterday had 2 maiden races,a race for 3yo's only and a stake with a 3/5 M.L horse.On a weekday,I could understand,but on a weekend? Does the Delmar managment think horseplayers don't notice and are only paying attention to the fashionable looking ladies there? Today we have to suffer through 2 more maiden races in our Pk4. In the good old days,Sam Spear would announce the weekend card emphasising that there would be no maiden races on the card.The card would consist of seasoned veterans. Now the argument is too much racing has cut into that luxury of cards free of maidens,2yo's and lightly raced 3yo's.But these races are now dominating the cards.Many smaller tracks seem to have no trouble carding a pk4 for experienced runners only,and with larger fields to boot. If you use software to handicap,it will just draw a blank on those maiden races,since half of them are firsters. I really think the Delmar management is relying too much on its past popularity which was partly born from quality racing cards that is absent today.

Commentary

Neither of us scored this weekend. :rolleyes: Neither of us had the 7 in the last race. Problem was their was no recorded trouble on this horse. Bris said"Split foes'late 3rd". When you switch to extended comments it says"Blah blah blah....came out start". So I watch the replay(after making my bets) and this horse had all kinds of trouble in its last including getting pinched back to look hoplessly out of it,then has plenty of kick left to get third. If my 8 had held on to win the first leg @10-1 and I missed the pk4 cause of this incomplete information,I would be in a tizzy.

Rewind to yesterday's 9th. I had the winner but that's not the point. Again the trip note seems insignificant.It said"off bit slow,4w lane". So I watch the replay. Can you say understatement. Where do they get the word "bit" when this horse who is ussually on the pace is last? Then he winds up and Trevor notes it and says he has to go 6 or 7 wide. Trevor was right. It wasn't 4W. If you see the race,his win yesterday is a no brainer.

I point this out because my software gives points for trouble. If you go 6w you get trouble points. If you go 4w you don't. In the case of the 7 horse today,he would get trouble points which automatically excuses a horse who looks negative in that he ran worse at a lower class than he did previously at a higher class. Those kinds of horses are thrown out unless they had recorded trouble.

I'm not saying this to excuse anything I played. I say this because it seems that in order to win at horseracing today, there is so much inaccurate and incomplete information,that you allmost have to do it full time just to have a shot.But who has the time.

The Late Ron Cox would start his day at 5 A.M with handicapping till 10 P.M. getting his trip notes from the days races in order.He did well. Towards the end of his life he hit a $250,000 Pk6 with the power of information that comes with long hours of hard work. 10 days later he died.Not from the hard work. Prostrate cancer.

You said it all ... he was "hopless at start."

Saturday's pick-four:

3,4,9 ... 4,6,8,10 ... 2,4 ... 2,4,8,10 (x$2) = $192;

7 ... 1 ... 7 ... 1,2,3,4,5,8,9,10 = $8.

Moron trips/trouble later.
