John Dean, Nixon's lawyer & Goldwater protege.

Tonight former Nixon White House Counsel John Dean discussed his intriguing new book "Conservatives without Consciences" as the lead story on Keith Olbermann. In it he described how his discussions with the late Barry Goldwater, the nominal father of the modern conservative movement, evolved from talking about just how far afield that movement has grown to a discussion of how authoritarianism has crept in and taken over the Republican Party.
Sparked by Goldwater, Dean continued to research on the subject with various scholars looking into the psychology of authorianism and found a wealth of information on the subject.

Acording to his findings, a vast majority of Conservatives are drawn into the Leader/Follower archetype, where the Leaders are considered infallable, and the loyalty of the Followers is completely unshakable. About "23% of the populace falls into the follower category" said Dean. "These people are impervious" to fact, rationality and reality. And their "Numbers are growing".

And how is this different from some one making the same observation about the liberal left?

Not sure. Do you know a White House Counsel to a Liberal President that has made such a claim?

Also, according to the piece its conclusions were reached through research, not opinion, or observing.

But anyway, It is a conservative making the argument. So discuss it amongst yourselves. I just posted the information.

Dean isn't exactly deified by the GOP or Conservatives. In fact, he is pretty much considered a pariah.......... just ask G. Gordon Liddy

Liberalism is the new fascism. You see it everyday on college campuses, in the current attacks on Joe Lieberman, on liberal blogs like Kos and DU, in teachers' unions, anywhere and everywhere that so-called progressive ideas are tendered.

The reason Bush's poll ratings have declined is because a large number of conservative Republicans think he hasn't been conservative enough, not because a large number of Americans in general think he's too conservative. Compare this to the Clinton phenomenon, when nothing Clinton could do was despicable enough to shake the faith of his faithful.

Just because Dean says he "researched" it doesn't mean it isn't subjective.

Conservatives as mindless followers?Something like this sounds as if the source might be the NY Times,New Republic,Nation,or Washington Post. One of the basic precepts of modern conservatism is individual responsibility and less government. It is the political Left that has become a slave to collectiveization. The Democratic party is almost completely controlled by those with Marxist/Leninist ideology that believe in an all powerful centralized government and that socialism will work if done "the right way".Sounds like the pot is calling the kettle black on this one.

Conservative mindless followers?

Aren't the liberal darlings like Michael Moore and Al Gore making 72 minute-90 minute movies that show their own view of a situation, thus giving the viewer no opportunity to ask questions, seek outside opinions, and raise logical doubts for the whole hour+ viewing time? Shown in dark theatres, hard to take notes. Their followers getting upset when those of us 'outside' their group ask questions, raise doubts, point out contradictions and incorrect or slanted truths, and then often prove points to be oppposite or at least in dispute?

Oh no, no unbiased indoctrination going on there in the liberarl camp. Oh, no sirreee bob.

Seems to me there is at least 23% or more Liberal mindless followers. Perhaps there are 23% mindless followers on both sides, or just about any issue. Of course, its the liberals that are making movies so people don't even have to read before they are indoctrinated, so perhaps the edge to mindlessness can tip toward the liberal side in this case.

I said it before and I'll say it again!!!

The conservative posters on this board are eager to defend anything that the President of the United States of America George Bush does and believe that he is above the law. What Bill Clinton did to offend the sensibilities of Americans is so mundane compared to what one may think is the eminent dictatorial powers eminating from this administration. There is a Leader/Follower archetype where the Leaders are considered infallable in the Republican party (and some posters here also).

And of course you will wrong again.
Obviously, you don't read too many posts. More than a few of us have criticized the President on many topics, unlike the flock of lemmings that are the demlibs - not a one ever deviating from a very orchaestrated song sheet.
But what you don't understand is that is not that we think he is above the law so much as it is he is doing exactly what WE think is the right thing to do.
We give him some latitude becasue the many messes Clinton left on his way out the door - 9-11 plot unfolding ( they were already here), a recession, N Korea trained to act like it is today to get attention, and unchecked growth of terror cells.
Thank you Billy Boy!

How does it Violate TOS?

GaryG has been running around here with the Confedrate Flag for a year. No one says nothing.

I post a research project from a Repug, about Repug's, with a Title that is appplicable to the content. no? And I'm a TOS violator?

As far as the name calling, I was a little more agitated than normal yesterday. However, my tirade paled in comparison to Ann Coulter's. Whom you love and worship.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise in violation of any law.

Let's try the highlighted grounds above. I won't have this argument . It is not my place. The boss can have this one with you. I think calling me "brainless" might be hateful. You coined it to offend obviously. Standard operating procedure anymore.

no no no.... no and one more no!

The title of the book is Conservatives without Conscience. When one is without consciousness , one is brainless. So hence my title... Brainless Conservative. Very academic.

But I digress...it did no good. If you look through the replies. No one gives the book any merit. Matter of fact, two conservative posters gave these enlightened comments... (paraphrasing).
No! Liberals are blind followers!...

That would be bluenote, and stevestaeman. No comment on the book, no comment on the research, no comment on its a Conservative talking to Conservatives. No comment on he was a protege of Barry Goldwater..... the father of conservatism. Nope.... nothing. Just a ... nah nah nah...I'm not a follower... you are.

But the point wasn't made by me. It was made by Dean. I can track down his e-mail if you want to disagree with his premise. But I didnt post to have you offer enlightening comments like......"his research applies to liberals".....

Because it applies to Conservatives. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I could have cared less about the guy's book until you brought it up. I haven't bought or read anybody's book on either side of the spectrum.

I would think people who seems to lack a conscience lack a connection to their soul. That might leave their brain to do evil.

The title of the book is Conservatives without Conscience. When one is without consciousness , one is brainless. So hence my title... Brainless Conservative. Very academic. Nitpick: Conscience, Consciousness -- different things. Most animals have consciousness (i.e. are conscious of themselves and their environment, and the fact that they are separate from it), but generally only humans are credited with having a conscience, which has to do with morals. So you can lack a conscience, and still not be "brainless". More apt would be "unprincipled".
