I have a lot to learn. I decided to play some Mountaineer tonight and I decided to quit after race 6 because I am really missing something. I have made about 7 online wagers and I am 0 for 7. I still need to master the art of handicapping in some way.

In the races that I did play, I picked:

Race 3: Para Vidinha, Ran 8th
Race 4: Zim and Torre, Ran 8th
Race 5: Gold Prize, Ran 6th
Race 6: Home Run Baby, Ran 2nd
Race 7: Western Drifter, Ran 5th

I only put money on Race 3 and Race 5.

One thing I'm seeing is that the early speed usually weakens towards the end.

I know this is a race selection forum, but can anyone give me any pointers on what they can pull out from what I'm picking?

BTW, the rest of my picks:

Race 8: Run For Freedom
Race 9: Athena's Crown
Race 10: Handsome Darby

I do know that I play too much like the general public in that I look for the one horse that looks like it'll win on paper.

Maleetzia,

MNR can be a tough track for a beginner. Knowledge of the trainers can be very important there as well as knowledge of the current bias , if one exists. Also, I rarely play the turf races, its an odd surface. Buddha can tell you more about that. The #3 in the 10th was a total enigma, no way I was coming up with that one. Best of Luck.

Thanks for writing back. I can guarantee that the #3 in the 10th was an unexpectable win and a huge longshot, I think it was like 22.60:1 odds?

Which track is the best to stick to? So far I have wagered on Hollywood, Penn National, and Mountaineer. Penn National, Charles Town, and Mountaineer are all tracks that are the closest to me, but still a sizeable distance away. I've never been to a real racetrack.

I do need to stick to one track though.

My problem is still learning the Art of the Handicap. I read Beyer's book "Picking Winners" and while it helped, it hasn't solved my game.

Which track ? Thats a hard question because there are times when I find them ALL hard. There is no fast way to become a good handicapper. Books are good to learn the basics. I have probably read most of them and have to say I have learned more from the people on this board. Software, I have tried many programs, theres a lot of trial and error with that. There are many good programs out there, but remember you make the final selection, not the software. Experience, you need a lot of that to become a good handicapper. After many years playing the game you will always find new stuff to learn. There are no easy answers to your questions. Foremost enjoy the game, Racing is one of the greatest forms of entertainment. Read some more books. There are many reviews of popular titles on this site. If software interests you there are many reviews on this site from experienced players. Read the old archived posts right here on PaceAdvantage, there is a ton of good stuff RIGHT HERE ! Maybe concentrating on one track is a good idea. Get to know the trainers/jockeys on the circuit. Become familiar with the distances run and note any trends such as a speed bias, post positions bias etc. Good Luck and don't be afraid to ask questions here, this is the best horse racing board around  .

I think that the only thing that I hit all night was the first race exacta. Bad night, and somehow the storms missed us. Don't know how, but that threw my handicapping into a loop. Back at them tomorrow. If I get the racing cards early, I am going to try to go head and head with albert some more :)

Good call in the last...........That trainer is very hard to bet if he is lucky win 2 races a year. As for the 2 you actually bet the 8 in the 3rd showed you when pressed folds up like a tent and thats what happened. The horse in the 5th I found out after the race has a breathing problem andanother trainer that isn't that great. They deepened the track this past week and the times have slowed for about 4-7 seconds from what they were running a week or two ago. When times get slow they tend to close more but there is always the exception.

Yeah Maleetzia,

I was looking at the way the horse ran in it's past performances. It wasn't about the distances, except that the 6f was where it ran the majority. The horse consistently had closing speed. You can see in the majority of the races that it would be something like 8 5 4 3 or 8 5 3 2 or 6 5 1 1. The horse has te right idea, it just couldn't come through.

The last two races were really a turning point 6(8) 5(4 1/4) 1(hd) 1(3) and 7(13) 7(12) 4(8) 3(3 1/2). In the Win race, this horse takes the lead and is still pulling away. In the Show race (most recent), this horse comes from 7th to finish 3rd making up almost 10 lengths.

In the first couple races that I bet on, the horse weakened because it came out with early speed. So I decided to look at a horse that didn't have early speed, but liked to turn it on towards the end.

Another point, in the last 3 races Handsome Darby had a 2nd, 1st, and 3rd. On the 2nd place, this horse was behind a horse that won it's next race. In it's 3rd place, the horse that beat Handsome Darby in 2nd place won it's next race.

Finally, the same jockey was riding this horse on it's most recent win and each race this jockey has steered this horse to a payoff.

I think alot of this was subconscious because I didn't look at this horse that indepth at the time. But it was good practice to write it out and it turned out to be logical with reason!!!! (in my opinion)

It was a smashing call Maleetzia. The subconscious is a powerful entity at times.
