Looks like they cant get a budget passed in trenton and the tracks might be dark next week in one of the busiest weeks of the year

http://www.bergen.com/page.php?qstr=eXJpcnk3ZjczN2Y3dnFlZUVFeXkzJmZnYmVs N2Y3dnFlZUVFeXk2OTU0MjM1JnlyaXJ5N2Y3MTdmN3ZxZWVFRX l5NA==

Horse racing at the Meadowlands, Monmouth Park and Freehold Raceway might also be halted if a shutdown is ordered, officials said. Both the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park tracks have either thoroughbred or harness racing events scheduled for the coming Fourth of July weekend.

Several state officials said a shutdown would prevent required inspectors from the New Jersey Racing Commission from attending the events. New Jersey law requires the presence of inspectors at racing contests to ensure fairness of matches, officials said

quote from the article - A shutdown could mean an end to all non-essential services. If you think about it, governments at every level these days - local, state, and federal - all tax the daylights out of us - and mostly for stuff that could easily qualify as "non-essential services." Now they're talking about closing campgrounds and beaches because of the shutdown. Is it just me? I tend to think most people could find a spot to plop down a towel on the beach or a place to camp in the woods without the government having to be involved. I tend to think guys selling hot dogs and beer and the gate crew and the chartcallers and the announcer and the guys punching tickets and the guys running the tote system at the track could manage to keep going whether or not state government offices are open or closed. By all means, shut the government down. If they're over budget keep them shut down until they figure things out. But don't f*ck with the people. Leave us alone. Let us continue to exist... let us find a racetrack or campsite or beach to enjoy while the you politicians play your idiotic political games.

Have to remember that it is Jersey, almost a banana republic. More leadership from John Corzine (getting dangerously close to off topic).

The Meadowlands flats used to be my favorite meet. I remember a NYTimes article circa 1985 where Steve Crist referred to it as "Action City." It used to be. Nowadays its 6 Jersey Breds on a Merry-Go-Round.

"New Jersey law requires the presence of inspectors at racing contests to ensure fairness of matches, officials said."

Huh?
Matches?
Horse racing matches?
Boxing, wreslting, tennis, or soccer matches, but horse matches?

Goes to credibility, your honor!

BTW, I was in NJ once.

Yeah, matches. That's what they burned down Garden State Park with.

Anyone notice that if you drive from New York to New Jersey, it's absolutely free, but to leave New Jersey you have to pay? Almost like paying a ransom.

Looks like they will salvage the weekend at MTH afterall. Early word is that they will keep everything running through Wednesday. Claiming that the legislators can't get any work done because of some flooding in Trenton. I never knew that they worked in the bowels of the statehouse there, not that it's a bad place to stick them.

All this dislike for the Garden State. :jump: Hey they have the best harness racing in the world at The Meadowlands and places like Ocean City, Wildwood, Cape May, Long Beach Island are still nice places for a vacation. Also a trip up from Freehold to Monmonth you pass by a lot of nice horse farms. Plus in Jersey you never have to pump your own gas. :jump: So Tom come on down for Meadowlands Pace Night on July 15th they are having a free beach towel night for the event. :) Just the sort of item you are looking for. Also I am sure they will have a capping contest and a petting zoo. With some live monkeys to feed. :jump:

Tom wouldn't want to leave that paradise up in Canandaigua, New York. I love how New Yorkers bash Jersey at every turn, but it's those NY plates that clog the parkway every weekend.

Yes, NJ sucks...you should stay the hell out of it. :)

BTW, there's no way this shutdown will happen. If it does, the majority of the beaches would have to close, and on 4th of July weekend, with the weather supposedly beautiful, that would be political suicide for any elected official with their fingerprints on it.

True. Problem is that you have to pass through places like Jersey City, Elizabeth and Kearny.

Ok, so NJ has cheap gas. I've got a cheaper way...gimme a burrito :faint:
Don't forget that it is AGAINST THE LAW to pump your own gas in NJ. Probably because if given the chance, New Jerseyans would accidentally kill themselves by wrapping the gas hose around their necks.

It came true - Monmouth runs Saturday, then shuts down.
Meadowlands cancelled tonight.
What utter morons run that state!
Could cost them a million bucks if they lose the whole holiday.

Are you kidding me...what by boat? It's like $10.00 for the Verrazano Bridge to SI to NJ...$7 to take the GW Bridge to NJ...$4 on All tunnels to NJ...please tell me how to get to NJ from NY for free!!!!

Internet betting went down at 6pm. We Jerseyans can only legally bet on the state sponsered 4njbets, so its back to the S Philly Turf club tomorrow.

Can't believe they couldn't reach a compromise for the July 4th weekend. The crux of the problem is a huge deficit that the new Democratic Governor wants to alleviate by raising the sales tax from 6 to 7 per cent. The Democratic controlled legislature recalls too well the last Governer (Florio) who tried to raise the sales tax and the disasterous political fallout from that effort.

Verranzano goes from SI to NJ? since when? try BK to SI.

7 bucks to take the GWB to jersey? where is that toll located? try the tolls are 6 dollars and they are in Fort Lee, NJ.

4 bones on tunnels to NJ? try the tolls are on the NJ side and they are 6 dollars.

every river crossing from metro NY to NJ is toll free. but keep in mind that they are opperated by the PORT AUTHORITY OF NY AND NJ. it makes perfect sense to keep the tolls on the NJ side since tolls in midtown, canal st and the cross bronx expressway would pretty much grind traffic to a complete hault and affect other routes within the city itself.

If you're all going to bash jersey, at least have the facts straight!

don't quite understand the jersey bashing here, but hey, if it means y'all will stay out that's quite fine with me.

just got back from mth an hour ago. they had the place shut down at 6. med is dark tonight.

Spoken by a guy from Jamaica, NY. Forget Brooklyn, which is idyllic enough...now THERE'S the Garden Spot of the World. You're right, NY is the best. The biggest and the best. No other state has bigger mice, rats, knives, guns, assholes, potholes, pot dealers, pimps...

That said: this action by the Governor of NJ is a disgrace. I was naive enough to think someone was looking out for the residents of this state, that this would never happen. Another big f-you to the constituents!

Many have lived in NY/NJ in the past. More people have migrated out of NJ than any other state in the last years, according to today's Wall Street Journal.

This thread is getting dangerously off topic. As I stated before I used to really love the Jersey circuit, even Garden State. The AC Casinos have got the tracks boxed into a slow death. The legislature is even more inept than New York (something I would have thought impossible). No one in Jersey politics cares about the sport.

One last off topic shot, I hope Hank Paulsen isn't is as big a Moron in the Treasury Dept as his fellow Goldman Sachs alum, Jon Corzine. To think that Corzine thought he could use the governorship to jump toward the White House or VP--one word to describe him: hubris.

Stevie Belmont
07-01-2006, 11:17 PM
Hey Ohio Boy what do you know? Jack. Richard Codey was crucial factor in the state not selling the tracks last year to a private enity. Did you know that. Codey still plays a vital role in racing in Jersey. Codey lI m suoves racing.....

Corzine made Goldman Sachs what it is today. Maybe you should buy some funds and stop bitching.

Corzine has shown courage and balls in shutting down the state. it's sucks, but the numb nutz in the legislature need to understand there is a mamouth defecit....Borrowing is not the answer or an option. Absolutley not an option...peroid.

If Corzine has such great courage why not shut down the casino's first?? And BTW this is Democrats fighting with Democrats about the budget. Corzine wants the state sales tax to go up from 6% to 7% always a good idea uh? just raise taxes. And the timing doing it on the 4th of July holiday weekend is moronic. I live in Pennsylvania and we have plenty of budget fights between different parties but I give our Democratic Gov Rendell credit, he works with people.

Hey Ohio Boy what do you know? Jack..

Lived in NYC for almost two decades, working on Wall Street for Bulge Bracket Investment Banks in Bond Trading--Corzine is also out of the Fixed Income side. Starting going to the Meadowlands regularly in 1982. BTW, who could disagree that Goldman is an incredibly successful firm, but don't confuse a few managers with the totality of the organization. Plus being an executive in a firm like GS can lead to arrogance---the man doesn't make the times--right place at the right time.

The tracks are only opening this weekend because of the court order. The beaches and state parks don't close until July 5th, and the Casinos may have to close, so Corzine will blink. It is so transparent, close the state lottery and the racetracks--only the degenerates and suckers will be affected. Close a few state offices and the employees will love you, giving them a longer holiday weekend.

From a Ny Times article on "disappointed gamblers."

Then the state canceled the evening's horse races, and not long after, lottery machines stopped spitting out tickets. And the mood turned sour.

George Gunn, 41, came to the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, only to find the races were off.

"I can't smoke, I can't bet. I'm going to go to Russia and be a Communist," he said. "I just got here. They ruined my whole night. I came for a little excitement."

What really cracks me up is that Corzine is quoted in the NY Times that he is doing it "for the children." (raising taxes) http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/02/nyregion/02corzine.html?hp&ex=1151899200&en=e918303f123b5143&ei=5094&partner=homepage

With the Casinos threatened and the beaches scheduled to close during the summer, Jon "Florio*" Corzine has got to try to find a face-saving way out. His poll numbers are already in the 30's. Raise taxes, chase away businesses and home owners...doesn't sound like a winning hand to me. Why not cut spending? It is also clear that he is no friend to horse racing.

(*Florio was a democratic governor, who like Corzine ran on a platform of not raising taxes then raised them and was handily defeated in the next election in 1990)

I was born and raised in NJ...can't understand all this anti-Jersey sentiment. I now live in Philly, and brother, if you want to find a place that's really the armpit of the world, look no further. Philly's got a murderous wage tax, inept city government, people who have no regard for other people, neighborhoods on the brink of ruin, poor city services...I could go on and on, not to mention shitty horse racing on the city outskirts at Philly Park (owned by non-U.S. citizens) and even worse out at Penn National.

Jersey's beaches are wonderful, Monmouth Park is an historic jewel and the track I'd rather be at more than any other in the country (yes, even over-priced Saratoga with its plethora of York-breds) and more history from the Delaware River to the Atlantic Ocean than you can shake a stick at. Go ahead and rag about the state government, but if you steer clear of Newark, Orange and Elizabeth and stay in the middle to lower counties, you won't find a better place to live.

from NJ.com

Until a budget is adopted, the state Lottery is out of commission. The last tickets were sold just before 8 p.m., drawing an angry reaction from players accustomed to a daily date with scratch tickets and pick-'ems.

"It just doesn't make any sense," said Rachel Harris, 68, a retired teacher who spent about $30 on lottery tickets at a Newark convenience store ahead of yesterday's moratorium. "They're taking away from our recreation."

Lottery drawings will continue for those tickets already sold.

Horse racing at Monmouth Park was suspended at 6 p.m. At the Meadowlands, it never got started, with last night's slate of 13 live races and simulcast wagering canceled. The tracks are not permitted to operate without state inspectors.

Last night, however, a judge lifted the ban on racing to allow two groups representing horse owners to challenge it in court. A spokeswoman for Meadowlands Raceway said it would reopen today for simulcasting and that Monmouth Park would resume its racing.

From AP:

Atlantic City's casinos were ordered to close Wednesday, the latest casualty of a state government shutdown that entered its second day Sunday after the Legislature failed to adopt a budget by its July 1 deadline.

The head of the Casino Control Commission ordered gaming in Atlantic City to cease at 8 a.m. Wednesday - the day after the July Fourth holiday - if New Jersey fails to enact a budget by then.

That means an accord will be reached by Wednesday for sure.

Got to admit this show had some of the funniest stuff involving horse racing and Oscar Madison - I have many favorite episodes but one that springs to mind is when Felix gives Oscar money to put a down payment on his gravesite, and he gambles it away. Also the show when a "midget named Harry" gives Oscar and Felix "inside information" and they go crazy at the windows...I read Jack Klugman's autobiography recently and he loves to go to the track, so this acting part was right up his alley.

This year has been terrible at MTH > very small fields, almost like the cards that they have during the week during August only one month early. With grass racing back, I was expecting a bit more in the way of wagering opportunities but its almost as bad as ARL and CD!
