I made my first visit there a couple of Wednesdays ago during the torrential monsoon. Was pretty cool, had a table, tv and two chairs right on the finish line for only $2. Both of us, me and my friend, really liked the place though the track is now way to big for it's clientèle.

Will definitely go back there when I'm up to doing the 4 hour drive again.

I went Belmont day to spend the day with John and another PA user.
Nice time. ..........although the place is crumbling.

John's got a private box up there and when we walked in it was like he was the MAYOR of Rockingham. He knows everybody and is well liked.

Had a friend of mine who used to go up to the Rock every summer when the t-breds where racing there. Suff he may have known your friend as many of regulars up there seemed to know each other quite well. His name was George Walker and his wife Barbara. Of course George and "Babs" private box was a lawn chair near the wire. :jump: :jump:

The owner Geo. Carney died a few years ago. His family let the General Manager Ed Callahan pretty much run the place. Callahan is a nice man but not a well man. He has kidney problems and stays in his office that is in another building a way from the grand stand and club house.....and I believe his roots are in Harness racing from
his earlier days.

His staff do a pretty good job.under the condition. Larry Murphy,Admissions Director does more than his job calls for and so does his staff.

The place is run down, the parking lot has pot holes. The ceilings have the old fashion form blocks. When it rains and there is a leak in the roof these blocks become heavy and can come down. The ceilings have water marks all over them. The air condition in the Terrace club horse is bad on hot days.Although management has tried to correct the problem. It probably needs a new system.

Us box owners main complaint is the Bingo players. Especially on weekend when most simulcast tracks run their feature races at 5:30 to 6:00. They allow the Bingo player to sit in any box free after 5:30.Bingo players will harass the horse players by asking them if they can leave their belongs in your box.until you leave or insist that they leave something on your table to claim it from other bingo player. It forces you to leave the area and sit and play on the other side away from bingo players.

Will there ever be live Thoroughbred race again at Rockingham. Not under the present owners. Will slot machines make it a better place to attend. Yes, I think Rockingham would spruce up the place if they could have slots. I believe Slots would bring in a younger crowd that may get interested in horse racing.

Other than that, the food is good. Better than a lot of other tracks I have been to.There buffet is worth the price Everything on the table looks fresh and taste good.

I will invite the Rocingham Staff to address the above if they wish to.

Best of luck to a future Rockingham.

John,
Thank you for sending me the posts from your board. I attempted to reply to the board but I am not a registered user. Possibly you could pass this along.

First, my health, although it is true I am in kidney failure I feel very good and spend considerable time in the Clubhouse and Grandstand area, if any of the board visits please let me know. If anyone is interested in donating a kidney that would be fine too.
Rockingham has a great history and regrettably like most of the Harness and Thoroughbred industry we have seen better days. Revenue is down 50% from the year they opened Foxwoods in CT. Our staff does a great job with the financial restraints that must be on them. We offer a great facility as compared to many, yes there are some roof leaks that we continue to work on, and yes we need to replace a few air conditioning units in the Turf Club but we are proud of what we have and continue to provide some of the freindliest service in the business.
The future could be a great one with appropriate revenue streams, or without the right legislation we will probably only race another 3 or 4 years before development takes over.
Hopefully I have answered the Board comments and would be happy to do so in the future. I am glad we have people out there that are interested and we will try to improve on some of the problems.

btw it was Joe Carney not George (George owns Raynham Dog Track)

John, it would be nice indeed if all track mangement would respond so quickly. I hope all goes well for Ed Callahan and The Rock. Really enjoy betting on the Rock's Harness racing and hope that things break right and they stay in business for many years. Sadly I hear what Mr Callahan is talking about with "development" as the old Liberty Bell Park became a super mall. Garden State Park going the same way.

It's nice to see that Mr. Callahan responded to some of the comments made here. I wish Mr. Callahan all the best of luck with his health.

Rockingham Park was a really nice place and the people there helped a lot whenever I had to ask questions (and I had to ask a few.) My friend really liked it up there a lot and wants to spend a full week up there before the meet closes.

This is one track that I do not mind giving my business to. As long as the Rock races trotters, I'll bet on 'em.

John

You know guys,Suffolk Downs faces the same dilemma as Rockingham Park.maybe more being in Massachusetts the State take may be higher than New Hampshire.I am not sure. Also the expense of a full barn area and a higher purse distribution than the harness races. We all thought the slot bill would go through this year for Massachusetts. It was put down by the House of Representatives

SUFF, would be the guy to fill you in on Suffolk Downs SUFF, was affiliated with the horsemen until a year or two ago and still has contacts there. There was some talk of Rock running Thoroughbred Turf races this year. Maybe SUFF or Ed Callahan can fill us in.

Zman179, Let me know when you and your friends come to Rock again. I would like to say Hello.

R7 was a nice result for you Zman. The exacta paid $119.40 and was your 1st and 3rd picks. I had the 7 in the 2nd race at $27.20 couple of first pick winners which were to low to bet. No pic3 hits for me today at Rock so not a good day.

Thanks Mel. Actually, I didn't bet the exacta in the 7th but hit the 5-6-8 tri box that paid $499.60 (had it for a buck.) Would've had the late pick 3, but the 4 in the second leg, on a long lead, misbehaved. Like Meatloaf said, "One out of ten ain't bad."

Don't worry Mel, we'll get 'em on Friday. BTW, excellent call on the 2 in the last race. Noticed that you also picked two cold trifectas.

Thanks a bunch, Melman, for your continued sharing of your hard work and excellent selections. With all the thoroughbred tracks, I don't follow the trotters too often, but with the late start at many tracks today I'll be following your numbers at the Rock.

BTW, I was very impressed by the quick respose from the director at the Rock. I wish some of the TB officials were half as responsive.

Thanks again. Good luck to all and have a great holiday weekend!

If not for my health problems would be taking a trip up to the Rock just on that alone. Hope the Zman is able to get back up there and maybe meet up with him. I started to play the Rock this year but the starts of races there are terrible. Check out Race 2 on 6/30. The starters get called and only 2 horses are near the gate as the race goes off. One horse broke stride shortly after getting close to the gate after being called and the other 5 horses were anywhere from 4-10 lengths behind as the race went off. I think this track has a no recall rule. I've seen it too many times at the Rock this year and theis race was the last straw. I WOULD RECOMMENT TO MAN Y PEOPLE THAT YOU AVOID THE ROCK. YOUR MONEY WILL BE LOST AT THE START BECAUSE THE STARTER COULD CARE LESS IF 7 OF 9 HORSES ARE NOWHERE NEAR THE GATE AT THE START. I'm sure a feew people will not blame the starter but how can 7 of 9 horses be nowhere near the start unless the starter doesn't care or the race is fixed! AVOID THE ROCK AT ALL COSTS

Had the right numbers all day long but it was chalk day for the most part. I do not bet the tri's or super's I stick with win exacta and pic3/pic4 bets. Cashed on two win bets today out of nine bets. Paid $7.00 and $21.30 also had both of the pic3's but the payoff's were low what with all the chalk. First pic was $43 and the 2nd $176. The exacta's on races 7 and 8 were OK at $70 and $60. Hope you made some cash speedking.

Rock in a hard place

N.H. racetrack fighting for survival

By Mark Blaudschun, Globe Staff | July 2, 2006

SALEM, N.H. -- Ed Callahan has a plan. He's had it for a couple of years. He ``knows what makes sense, " knows what he would like to see.

As he ponders the future while sitting in the half-filled Turf Club on a sleepy, misty afternoon, Callahan, the vice president and general manager at Rockingham Park, is waiting for the running of the New Hampshire Sweepstakes, which used to be one of the marquee events at the Rock

Thanks Suff.
I feel that regardless of slots management has to do something to get younger people involved.

There is a learning curve to handicapping and once a person learns it. It is in their blood. They will be horseplayers for life.

Casino's have morning classes to teach people table games. Why not teach
young people the fundamentals of handicapping.

From time to time younger people will ask me something about the past performances.

They are willing to learn...
