The way the 8 finished, I'm glad I decided to go the safe route and box the three that crossed the wire together. Finish was 3-8-5, 38 exacta paid $28.60, 3-8-5 trifecta $76.60. Not much, but enough to get rid of some of the red ink from the first two races.

At 5 minutes to post, I want to cover a possible alternative by making a modest hedge bet on 9-1, straight exacta.

#1 won at $3.40, 3 placed. 1-3 exacta $13.00. With the hedge bet on the 9-1, I came out ahead, but just barely.
