Barbaro Beat:

Barbaro in 'Excellent' Condition; Use of Hind Leg in Breeding Process Explained (http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=33813)
Dr. Dean W. Richardson, chief of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa., reported Thursday that Barbaro was in excellent condition. "He looks great and everything is fine," Richardson said of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner. Blood-Horse (http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=33813)

Visits with Barbaro good therapy for anguished Brette (http://thoroughbredtimes.com/todaysnews/newsview.asp?recno=64173&subsec=1)
Each morning for the last 12 months, trainer Michael Matz's assistant/exercise rider Peter Brette climbed aboard Barbaro knowing that a horse like the long-striding Dynaformer (http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/isd/stallion.aspx?stallion_no=1049059) colt was almost as rare as a winning Powerball ticket. Thoroughbred Times (http://thoroughbredtimes.com/todaysnews/newsview.asp?recno=64173&subsec=1)

Derby winner is just a horse in a stall (http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/sports/14718635.htm)
He's got a stall with a view, a night stand with fresh flowers, and plenty of apples, carrots and peppermints to share with fellow patients in the intensive care unit at the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals. Kentucky.Com (http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/sports/14718635.htm)

Surgeon agrees Barbaro likely bumped during Preakness (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/14718210.htm)
Dr. Dean Richardson is much more interested in the now and the next than the then, but the surgeon who operated on Barbaro said, "My impression from the beginning was that the horse was bumped right before the injury." All the Barbaro you can handle, and THEN SOME!

With Famous Equine Patient, Barbaro's Vet Gains Celebrity Status (http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=33829)
The doctor who helped save Barbaro's life strides out of his office, plops into a chair and bangs his hands on the table in front of him. "So," he begins, "what do you want me to say?" It is a strange and exhausting time for the cocky and self-confident Dean Richardson, head of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals. FAQs About Barbaro; Colt Continues Daily Improvement (http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=33828)
Barbaro, winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), continues to improve daily as he recovers from a shattered hind leg sustained at the Preakness on May 20. "I'm very pleased with the progress Barbaro is making," said chief of surgery Dean W. Richardson. "Everything is fine." Blood-Horse (http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=33828)

That piece I liked. Dr. Richardson sounds like an intersting and talented guy. A bit of a character. That's a trait I find likeable.

Don't know if I'd want to work for him, but from a distance he strikes me as the right man for the job.

A brief update on Belmont day would be enough. Instead they are going to not show the Manhattan and Acorn on ABC and devote the time to Barbaro features. Its old news now. Lets turn the page.....

The day Jazil won the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), June 10, ABC Sports visited Barbaro and put him on television. There was even a TV set placed in the ICU. Would Barbaro watch the Belmont?

At first, he seemed interested: When the call to the post sounded, the 3-year-old colt walked to the front of his stall, ears pricked and head up, Sweeney said. By the time the field turned for home, though, Barbaro had turned away, walked to the back of his stall and relieved himself.

It's not exactly catchy.

PA - I was a participant in that thread and was deep in pursuit of the answer to that caper. I respected your conviction of thought and when the caper was solved, still thoought you had basis with the Calder/CD thing et al.

I hadn't realized that you felt the egg on your face as much as you did and was simply kidding with the 99% comment. I accept your apology as I feel it was the right thing to do. And will at this time declare that I have a playful way about me that probably is unwarranted on this board. I'll refrain and let the 'main gang' continue their endeavors.

If playful ways are unwarranted on this board, then Tom's in serious trouble...no need to refrain....

But let me ask you a serious question. Why do you think (with 99% certainty I might add) that it isn't a cause for concern that more screws had to be placed into Barbaro's shattered pastern?

Ops of that sort from my experience can have "punch ups" that cover area that heretofore wern't covered because they're revealed by the healing process. By adding screws it can enhanse the work previously administered and address areas not covered until the heal shows the direction it wants to take.
