I may be able to help:

I work at Emerald Downs and live in Auburn WA.

Are you staying at a hotel? There are several located very close to the track. Restaurants? If you find a good restaurant in Auburn please let me know. I would especially like to find a decent steakhouse. There are some okay restaurants in Federal Way WA, located just a few miles from the track.

The track is a nice facility...not huge, but fairly modern and very clean. Racing takes place on Thursday and Friday evenings at 6:00 (usally 8 races) and Saturday and Sunday at 2:15pm (usually 10 races). Stakes races are on Sunday. Admission is $4 for general admission. This will get you into several areas of the track. Reserved seating is $2 in the grandstand. You can reserve a table in the Rainier Terrace restaurant up to two weeks in advance.

I haven't been to the backside yet, but expect to in the near future. There are actually tours every Saturday at 10am.

Let me know what other questions I can answer for you.

If you want a decent restaurant, you will have to leave the city limits of auburn!! The melrose grill in downtown renton is good, but all the best food is up in downtown seattle.

Some things to do at Emerald.
1. Get a beer from Susan at the beer stand located between the wire and the 1/16th pole. There will be a ton of railbirds there, most famously, the goat.

2. Check out Joe Withee's paddock show. Always good for analysis on the race.

3. Listen for the Vic Pick 3!! Victor the Predictor has been around NW racing for years, he's an institution there.

4. And get treated to one of the best announcers anywhere, Mr. Robert Gellar.

Thanks a bunch, both of you! Looks like I won't be eating a lot. That's probably a good thing! I had heard that Robert Geller was one of the top announcers in the country and I enjoy his calls on TV. I will definitely take a tour of the backside. If you think of anything else, let me know, ok? I haven't read much yet about the stakes race on June 18th? Have you been to it?

Emerald is a functional mid-size race track. It will never be another Longacres as that place was unique in all the race track experiences this handicapper has ever discovered, but it is a nice place. Fun, and the crowds really get into it.

You can get good food at the Muckleshoots Casino.

The Saturday tour is a real treat. And bring a camera, because the view of Mt. Rainier is stunning on a clear day.

Okay, today I made it a point to find out who Da Goat is. It is obvious that I could not find him before because I was looking for him at the rail of the horse track, when he actually hangs out at the trackside bar Rail! Most famous huh? He is there a lot. I always thought he was just a buddy of Grant Forster's. Kind of like Mutt to Grant's Jeff :)

Very cool site indeed. I was just reading the Rich Perloff interview, then I got to thinking, what ever happened to Rich Perloff? Haven't seen him in ages.
