Simple questions deserve simple answers, with perhaps a list of those nations you have visited

For those that haven't ventured outside thier nations' borders, why not?

My wife and I have always wanted to live abroad for a few years -- and in fact right now we are considering the UK or ireland -- some small-medium sized town not a big city. Maybe set up a small business or something. Ireland has tough immigration procedures but the UK is easier.

Any suggestions?

I have been to (a shamefully short list due more to budgetary limitations than desire)

Canada
Iceland
UK
France
Monaco
Italy
Switzerland
China
Texas

On the other hand I have been to 35 states.

In order of visit:

Mexico (first, to visit old Caliente!; years later, tragically, to retrieve the remains of my sister-in-law, who perished the day after Christmas in San Quintin, B.C.)
Canada (Quebec Province only--primarily Montreal)

And, on a brief sojourn, early in my 41st year:

England (the Midlands and London)
Belgium (basically just to disembark and drive through)
Germany (Stuttgart and Munich)
The Netherlands (Amsterdam)
Austria (Salzburg)
Italy (on Eurail, as far south as Florence)

Surprisingly high "yes" vote total because I started this poll after reading an article stating that only about 1 in 5 Americans had passports. Impressive travel lists too. My own travels...

Europe:
UK (I been to every part so lets just count it as one)
France
Germany
The Netherlands
Austria
Switzerland
Italy
Slovenia

Asia:
Vietnam
Malaysia
Singapore

North America:
Canada
USA

This year, I'm hoping to visit New Zealand and perhaps back to the States, with maybe a quick ski trip to the Alps squeezed in.

When I answered and put Mexico, Canada, and the Cayman Islands, I felt like I was cheating. I mean those don't really count, do they?

Except for Canada and Mexico ( birth Cert), I was in the Navy so I did not need and never owned a passport.

I think there are a few reasons why Americans travel less internationally than say Europeans:

1.) Its expensive-- we are geographically isolated, plane tickets overseas always cost a fair amount. Most Americans are a long way from everywhere, sometimes even Mexico and Canada.

2.) We don't take nearly the amount of vacations that Europeans do, aside from teachers I don't know many who can take a whole month off. Getting 2 weeks at a time is impossible for many.

3.) We are pretty large and diverse ourselves, lots of traveling and exploring to do without ever leaving the country. It can take a whole lifetime to see everything just in the US.

4.) We are selfish and aren't interested in anyone else. :liar:

During my military years I never left the country. But if they'd ever attacked Missouri, North Carolina or D.C. I'd have been ready.

Passports are expensive these days. We just got them for our kids and they are like $106 each.

ANd that is if you have weeks to wait for them.

Americans Give Up Millions Of Vacation Days

May 23, 2006 8:02 a.m. EST

Ayinde O. Chase - All Headline News Staff Writer

Bellevue, WA (AHN) - Online travel agency Expedia.com, recently conducted a survey on vacation deprivations and found that Americans are likely to give back more than 574 million vacation days in 2006, with each employed U.S. adult age 18 and older anticipated to give up an average of four vacation days.

The number of vacation days each American is estimated to abandon in 2006 increased by one additional day over last year, boosting the number of total unused vacation days by more than 150 million versus 2005.

According to the survey 33 percent of Americans do not always take all of their vacation days, despite another 36 percent saying they feel better about their job and more productive when they come back from vacation.

Sally McKenzie, vice president and general manager, Expedia.com says, "There are incredible health and wellness benefits associated with time off from work. Americans should take a cue from their foreign counterparts and relish the vacation they earn."

On average, Americans leave four vacation days on the table, while our European counterparts do a better job fitting in vacation days.

Read this whole thread and nobody has been to Africa. Your missing a great adventure. A balloon trip over the savannah is a life long memory. A have kin folk from Holland who own a lodge in Kenya, spent much time there, last year 8 weeks.

Several weekends in Montreal, love the Museum.
10 days in New Foundland, bought a 36' ketch there, the owner was a CPA who took off time from work to get me use to her, some very nice people in New Foundland. Sailed her to Long Island and sold her, too much maintenance on a woody.
Spent 6 days in Belfast, Ireland, when the outside port engine caught fire on a Martin seaplane, been to better places.
East and West coast of Africa, Casablanca, Rabat, Oran & Bizerte. Port Said, Cairo, most of the upper Nile, Sudan, Ethopia, Kenya and Uganda.
India, Bombay and Calcutta (the worst place in the world)
Naples and envrions in Itatly
Isle of Corsica, very romantic
3 months in Southern France.
Gibraltar, climbed
half way up and decided I had enough, did the same with the pyramids in Egypt.

Oahu
Panama, both sides of the canal. Amazing piece of work
Isle of Negra, Philipines. If you ever decide to go "native" this is the place.
In the fall of 1945 spent time in Korea, before the war, Soul and Jensin, which later became known as Inch'on, longest tides in the world.
The winter of 45/46 on the Mongolian border, General Chang was worried about the Russians who had amassed a large army just 2 days before the Japs surrendered, the dumps of humanity.
Mexico City, spent numerous times there when I first came to S. Florida to see the bull fights. Truly an art. The Yucatan, Belize and most of the tourists attractions in Mexico and Yucatan, often thought about the simularity between the pyramids in Egypt and the Yucatan.
Have been to about 1/2 of the islands in the upper and lower Antilles.mostly on cruises, when you seen one you just about have seen them all.
Cut into that bankroll and get to Africa, you will enjoy it.

The question attracts people who've been abroad and are curious. I've been to every state except Alaska, Hawaii, North Dakota and Oregon. I was 150 km from the earthquake in Jogjakarta on Saturday morning at a place called Sarangan. In 2004 I had the misfortune to be in Aceh for the big one and a few months later was in Aceh again when the Nias quake arrived. Last year I was in Bali when the latest terrorist bombs were set off. Thank God every day you are in the US for all of the good things you have.
