It is certainly big news here. I'm going to at least one US match, either Italy or the Czech Republic. The Czechs are probably the better team of those two, in my opinion.

I was actually at the last World Cup in Japan because (conincidently) I was there on racing business at the time. Hadn't been to a soccer game since I was in college.

Once I figured out it was hockey-without-the-ice I really enjoyed it. Went to several games, including the finals.

LOL - When I got home I told somebody I had been to the World Cup and the response was, "Is that skiiing?"

bpiets,

I didn't know they had contests. My wife's Brasilian, and it's almost unfair how the Brasilians always go far. They're the only team to qualify for all 17(?) World Cups.

Ghana defeated the USA today and eliminated them from the World Cup.

Looks like FIFA might have to adjust their rankings

Spain are the biggest surprise to me. Hard to gauge the good teams, as their early opponents have been terrible.

Mexico/Argentina
You won't see another goal like that one for while.

England/Ecuador;
If England beat Portugal, it will be an upset AND a yawner.

Portugal/Holland:
One thumb only, because of the violence and the acting jobs.

Don't see how Italia can lose, but maybe they will. I expect Argentina, Portugal and Brasil to advance, setting up a Lusophonic semifinal and maybe a South American final.

Please, I'll do whatever it takes --- a lifetime of reading threads on trackchampion or About.com, ANYTHING --- but PLEASE discontinue penalty-kick shootouts. They're like having a guy standing in short center field, giving a head start to a runner on third and trying to throw him out ... TO DECIDE A GAME! :(
