Perhaps a new rule is needed.

Any horse breaking through the gate is an automatic scratch.

Fire away!

At least a mandatory vet inspection and sign off.
Maybe they should stop pushing them so hard at 2 - give them time to grow up.

After he broke threw the gate one of the commentaters mentioned how much force is needed to break the magnetic barrier. I couldn't believe he was put right back in without some type of check. Sure hope he pulls through this.

Ultrasound and x-ray inspection of all 4 legs every 6 months.
No cancelling of tickets until track vet examines and rules whether a horse is fit to continue, then a short time to allow for cancellation.
Whether it played into anything or not, Barbaro had 2/3 of the win pool.
How much $ was riding on Barbaro?

How about a new rule in regards to the Triple Crown races.
Like spaced at least 1 month apart for starters.

2 new rules i would like to see in horse racing are

1. you cannot run a horse back on less then 7 days rest.

2. anytime a horse is eased in his last race unless its equipment failure, in his nesxt race he should only be allowed to run for purse money only.

i've already posted similar thoughts but i add the following:

the triple crown events seem to have survived well though most of
previous century without horses breaking down until charismatic and
barbado

perhaps it is the rigirous training employed by the newer trainers loking
for high speed, maybe it is the breeding, but the triple crown seems
to be a series of races which are hurting these "stars" from having
a successful career.

even if they do well, the owners seriously look to the breeding aspect
to recoup their investment and profit by a win in the derby or belmont
and the horse is soon retired.

the time span between the derby and preakness is way too short based upon
the distance of the derby, and the path taken to get into the derby

i would believe owners with serious contenders will seriously look, in future
years at the breeders cup races being as better opportunity simply by
the timing of the race(S), running a more mature horse, and the possible reduction of risk of running a "3 1/2" year old through a rough campaign.
