"I don't think people realize that the first jump out of the gate, he tore his quarter off, which is like pulling your thumb off. I am very, very proud of the horse. I hate to see what happened to Barbaro and I certainly hope everything is alright."

DID BARBARO BREAKING THROUGH THE GATE BEFORE THE START CAUSE THE INJURY?

It's impossible to know.

"I watched him break through the first time and I watched him break the second time," said Dr. Larry Bramlage, the on-call veterinarian from the American Association of Equine Practitioners. "From the replay of the subsequent start, the injury did not occur with the false break."

WHAT IS THE INJURY?

According to Bramlage, a fracture above the ankle occurred first. As Barbaro ran on, a second fracture occurred below the ankle.

WHY DID THE INJURY OCCUR?

Any kind of uneven step could have caused the injury.

WHAT WAS DONE TO AID BARBARO?

A stabilizing splint was applied to allow him to walk into the equine ambulance. He was administered a light sedative and X-rays were taken that determined the fractures. He was then taken to the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa.

WHAT ARE HIS SURVIVAL CHANCES?

Pretty grim. Halory Hunter suffered a similar injury in a workout at Pimlico and was saved by surgery at New Bolton Center, but the colt suffered only a single fracture. Barbaro's demeanor during the immediate stages of his emergency treatment prevented the injury from being aggravated.
