Good article on Alsab, iron horse (25-for-51) born in 1939.

It's in the brisnet Handicapper's Edge, May 17.

P.S. No mention of handicapping "legend" Herman Miller. That's a good thing.

Hey, how about a game show called Beat The Chalk? Kind of a racy version of Shenanigans. Life-size game board, naughty jockettes with lots of whips. Plenty of horsing around, with chaps optional. If the wheel landed on Neil Drysdale, the spinner would be scratched and lose a turn. How's THAT for a perfect vehicle for Vic Stauffer?

Howard Grant?

This guy was an amazing study in weight loss. He never could get below 119 and was limited in the mounts he could get at that size. Still a capable fellow.

Was actually called the "Club Footed Comet". Had a bad hoof from an accident as a foal. The limp didn't show up at full gallop, but was very apparent when the horse walked. I visited the horse at the King Ranch in South Texas about twice a week as a kid.

The groom put me up on him once, so I can say I got to sit (not ride) a triple crown winner.

They always liked to point out that he wasn't sterile, even though the tests showed that. He never produced a thoroughbred foal, but when they turned him out with the quarter horse mares, he produced several.

Assault lived to nearly 30, and died in the early 70's. I was long grown and gone by then and had pretty much forgotten my childhood friend, but shed a tear when they notified me of his death. They buried him on the ranch.
