Turf,

Our Italian friends may find the adjective "wh@pping" offensive. :D

it's timely that wopping doesn't apply to talianos alone.

small fields? what is it with those calif. guys? they sure as hell have a supply of jocks. why not horses?

east coasters at least have an excuse, with so many tracks.

Jockeys love the racing here in Mexico ... I mean California.

Not many more at Bay Meadows. Can't they build a track in the middle of Cali and run only there? :)

Could the extra card they ran at Hollywood Park on Mon. May 15/06, have something to do with several of the short fields for this Thurs. card?

There have been predictions for many years that Calif. would eventually be in the condition we see today.
I really don't understand it. Is it lack of breeding or business failures or something else? There have been explinations along with these articles but, I can't recall any of them. I think at the time, I just didn't beleive that there could be any credibility to them.
Someone on this board might be able to explain.

One explanation, the lack of "deep pocket" owners, Very few people are interested in investing in a business where they know they are going to lose money, Those few who have the money are going into it only with the thought of winning some 3 year old races and than off to the breeding shed.

Woodbine had, I think, 47 last night in 7 races.
NYRA has had a couple of 4 horse stake races. I like to first narrow th efield fown to 5 contenders....looks like I will have to buy some horses and start entering them myself to do this! :D

I wonder if we have TOO many tracks in this game?
Nobody makes money in short field except owners.

Lowest I recall ever seeing was 43 before scratches (38 after) at BM a few years ago.

12 horse fields suck, give me nothing but 7 or 8 horse fields and try to remove the smile from my face.It is easier to make money in smaller fields.5 horse fields with a 3-5 fav and 9/5 second choice is no good but the optimal field size is 8 horses.

Give me 12 and 14 horse fields. The same kinds of horses win, but they pay a whole lot more.

The costs of doing business in California are extremely high, and this accounts for fewer horses, owners and trainers. Everything from housing, workers compensation and other insurance, electricity, to gasoline -- all are expensive propositions in the Golden State.

overall i think the industry is doing real well.

this set-up for Pimplico is putrid.

from 10:30 till 12:04, before anyone really gets interested, they can find good fields.
then they go into their Turf (could be good, if not moved to dirt) or their 7 horse fields from the 5th till the 13th.

i just aint gonna bother . gads man, hey i think we are looking at the triple crown winner, but aside from that, i'm playing elsewhere.

go get em matz.

ok Beacon;

i can see your points and i can agree.
just add a little common sense, stop already with the 6 and 7 horse fields, hey it's been going on for 20 some years and getting worse.

give me a 5 race card and cut the bull or close the shop, like GM or Ford, when you miss the boat, IT'S gone, too late.

you've got NO competition, and that may be the problem.
i'll be sympathetic for sooo looonnnggg.
