how do you figure the time of a horse when he loses by a nose would you say he is 1/5 of a second slower,and what would be the time for a one length loss.

Within a nose the time is the same.

king is on the nose.
for the sake of ease, it is not necessary to be too precise.
most use 5 or 6 lenghts per second, which (depends on your horse) would give you bout 55 to 60 feet per second in s. cal.
to figure your needs to cap, you need a little speed yourself.
so most long hand cappers will figure;
2 1/2 BL (beaten lenghts) to equal 3 BL
2 1/4 BL, to equal 2 BL.
so,
round off.
