It looks to me like you are making mainly solid choices. Whether those choices win or lose on any one given day is more up to the jockey, the trainers, and the unfolding of reality in the individual races. Knowing first hand that it is possible to pick top notch contenders and go 1 for 10 (or some other absurdly low number) with alarming frequency, I can sympathize with anyone trying to show a positive return on a daily basis.

It is the nature of the game that selections must be made the same at the end of the day as at the start. Keep making solid choices, and warn your readers that it is sometimes necessary to post losing days BECAUSE you make solid choices. Above all, try to avoid the Ninth Race Syndrome--wild exacta and trifecta wheels in an attempt to offset a bad day.

Like Michael Pizzola used to say, "Turn the page." No matter what the result at the end of the day may be--win, lose, or draw--don't let it mess with your head.
Good Luck

and win 5 and place 5 then it's not so bad. It's really a big swing in the P&L
If you can't get those. This is a real ugly day so I will just post the ROI for the day! I mean we all know this can happen but We will get through this and come back hard tomorrow! I also know I'm pushing pretty hard here. Anyway enuff of my crying here I always keep the Faith!

This was a real head knocker kind of day! As Traynor stated I was making I feel were pretty solid plays. We made a hell of alot of plays today. But at least I know how to post real fast and eye my figures in a very quick manner now!... That was some great practice..heh-heh.. I'm tired here so I will tell you we made 75 plays! and 45% of our selections ran 4th or better
45% of the time.. Which almost all of those ran 3rd & 4th.. So our
ROI today is this ugly figure: -62% :bang:
Well there is not much more I can say or want to at this point but as always I appreciate your views and have a great nite and we will be back at it tomorrow! I then may take a couple days braek after that. We will wait and see... Good nite...

Why don't you post any?? And If you would like we can go head to head anyday you want, let's do it for the whole forum to see. Can you respond to that? I would love to just quit all this trash talkin from all you immature unhappy individuals and see if you want to walk the walk. Talk is cheap! So all I will say is bring your game and let's do it! I really don't intend for you to respond to this but I would love it if you would go head to head with me! Let me know... :p

Hey look. If you're going to call yourself "Ultimate Selector!" and talk as if you have something really special, you have to prepare yourself for criticism on days you don't do well.

That's why I want to see a CUMULATIVE ROI. Not just broken down day by day. What's the ROI for ALL the picks you've made to date?

If it's positive, that will shut the critics up. If it's negative, well, some of the critics, as harsh as they may be, may have a point.

With all due respect Pace.. If thats the case then you should hold everyone to that standard and not just me. It seems you should come down on them and not me! What am I doing wrong? I am just defending myself. I'm posting picks and trying to be a gentleman in this forum. Is it because I get alot of views that pisses these guys off or what? That's a silly reason if they are jealous. I mean what's the point of someone comming into the thread and trash talking when they themselves don't post any picks. Hey, I can take criticism if it's done in good taste and in a discussionable way. Not to just be down right nasty, offensive and RUDE. Have some tact. I don't go looking to trash someone for no reason, especially if I have not even tried to to do posting myself! If you want this to be a forum of anything goes then let me know cause it seems even you get tired of having to police this and deal with it. Well, I am the same way it gets old and rediculous to put up with that kind of nonsense. There is a right way to do things and there is a wrong way! I like to do things the right way! It's okay if someone does'nt like what I do of the way I do it, hell they don't even have to like me. But why be an ass about it? If that's the case I can do the same and it would be ok right?
And you would defend me or not say anything to me but only to the person who posted right? anyway maybe you might just let the individuals work it out and find their own boundries! Just a thought...
I just don't get it. Am I out in left field here?

Respectfully,
Ultimate Selector!

You can see the logic behind the picks that were posted. Most of them ran good races and with a few breaks here and there, it could have been a profitable day. There are just those days where your 14-1 shot leads in the stretch and loses and you only bet to win. Next time you bet win/place, your horse runs third or you bet the exacta and you get first and third and didn't put anything down to win! It happens....you get over it and move on.

Ultimate Selector,

As one of what you'd probably consider your "attackers", let me try and respectfully put things in perspective for you, at least from my standpoint.

There is a saying used in poker and other typically adult games that goes something like "Hey, what are you doing, you think you're playing with little girls?" This is generally a reply to someone trying a strategy that is meant to be tricky or slick but is rather unsophisticated. Not that this is a great analogy to you and your posts but the tone of it might be of relevance.

No one here that I know of has any personal or professional animosity towards you whatsoever. This is however, a rather sophisticated, tough "New York" kind of crowd, not easily impressed. Almost everyone here, I'd imagine, understands the challenge of beating this game substantially, is a very tough and serious undertaking, not to be taken lightly.

Almost everyone here has the utmost respect for those who have and/or might accomplish such. When I proposed I was thinking about starting a Tout Sheet I got teased (good-naturedly) when I said I was going to have a unique one in that it was going to be profitable.

Many here have been in speculative arenas for decades and have low tolerance for people who make claims and don't back them up, not because they're jealous, they just have an innate aversion to BS, as it's so prevalent where games of profit and loss are conducted. There are always a million gurus and usually 999,999 of them are a complete joke and/or fraud.

While I commend you for your most friendly and upbeat tone, at times your tone in your posts can be rather pedantic (parental). When your ROI is in the 25% profit and up range, you'll have the respect that will allow you to speak as from Mount Sinai down to the masses. If not, that kind of tone can be considered offensive, relating back to my first sentence about "little girls".

If your picks were the worst on earth and you simply posted them and compiled the results, no one here would have a mean word towards you, there would rather, probably be encouraging posts to make you not feel too humiliated.

If however, you try and come off like a superior speculative intellect, you'd better be willing to back it up with results or face a critical crowd who will naturally find it insulting because we're not "little girls", so to speak.

I have the utmost respect for the fact that you have chosen a somewhat unorthodox approach to the game, namely toteboard reading. Frankly, I've got a few books on the subject and found it a rich area of study myself. Unfortunately I've found the toteboard a most unreliable indicator and not one that I can put my trust in exclusively.

Separating the "smart" money from what looks like "smart" money is not always so easily done. If you've managed to do this, there will be plenty of us that may well be interested in becoming your client. No one I've read about, heard about or run into has found a reliably profitable way to use the toteboard exclusively.

The one time I considered the toteboard in the NTRA National Handicapping Championship I changed my play based on my pick being "dead on the board" and robbed myself of a 3rd place $10,000 payoff by getting off the 15-1 shot that I had selected. That certainly wouldn't be the first time I'd been burnt putting too much faith in the magic of the toteboard.

I've played the dog races at times using nothing but the toteboard, and at times 15-1 and 25-1 shots have been obvious winning toteboard picks.
I have the utmost respect for your contrarian nature and intellect that no doubt led you to study toteboard moves. You might be THE guy that discovers how to win by a big margain in this game strickly using the toteboard, I certainly don't doubt that that's possible.

Not to ramble too much here but one other point. I understand that when you're pointing out that your picks are running 3rd and 4th that you're simply trying to say that they are well meant horses. Look at it this way, in an 8 horse field, throwing darts will get 50% of your selections in 4th place or better. It could well be that many of those horses just missed placing 5th or 6th, so the results are what they are.

If you're convinced that your selections are consistently well meant, even if they aren't going to win or place necessarily, maybe you should find a way to use them in the Trifecta or Superfecta and take advantage of their well meant nature, although since you're using the toteboard, I'd imagine you shy away from the exotics completely.

I guess my bottomline is twofold:

A. Remember who the PA crowd is, i.e. not "little girls". Address them with the respect due people who I'd imagine are mostly your elders and who proabably know more about many aspects of the game than you do.

B. Let your "long-term" results speak for themselves. If you shine, you won't have to buy ads here to find people who want to pay for your expertise (although PA wouldn't mind if you do). If you don't shine, you won't have anyone sniping at you trying to kick you when you're down.

My apologies for any offense you've taken to my posts in the past. I'm simply one who has ZERO tolerance for those that talk the talk but can't walk the walk. Best of luck to you in your efforts to beat the game.

With all due respect Pace.. If thats the case then you should hold everyone to that standard and not just me.

Why? You're the king of the hill when it comes to posting the most picks (well, you and BigMack at the moment). The top dog will always get the most attention, don't you think? That's why we focus on you.

Perhaps the name Ultimate Selector! has caused some to have unrealistic expectations when it comes to your performance. Perhaps that is why some of these people are so upset. Perhaps they are betting your picks and losing money along with you today. Nobody likes to lose money. Right?

Perhaps you could give us that cumulative ROI I've been asking about. You do keep records, correct? What is your cumulative ROI for all the days you have been posting these many picks? Is anyone else keeping track? Perhaps they know....

If you want this to be a forum of anything goes then let me know cause it seems even you get tired of having to police this and deal with it.

Nope, this will never will be a place where anything goes.

KoKo I'm shocked that you actully replied in a manner that deserves to be answered. This is the kind of criticism that I can relate to. It does'nt have to be the other way that you come at me. Now to reply to your comments.
I don't profess to know it all! I do know however that I do know what I am talking about when it comes to the totebord. I have been doing it from the beginning of my hosre playing career which started in 1978! All i am doing here is showing that it can be done! This is the only way I handicap. It's not about the big money moves or that kind of thing. It's really quite the opposite. All my selections are made without knowing thr horses name,
jockey, trainer, owner, distance of race, sires, bloodlines, breeding, workouts, in the money%, pace, or anything you can think of! I only know the horse by hids number. I don't know of anyone in all my years that can handicap soley by this manner. If you downloaded a screen shot of my program on wed thread then you can see the compexity of what I do.
I would challenge anyone to try and hanicap in this manner only! I think
I hold my own pretty good with my selections. Especially with the nimber of plays that I throw out. I do this not to be arrogant but I work my numbers and see just what they do. trust me I don't just put up a selection to be embarresed by or feel stupid about. Although it happens. But Overall I think I'm the contention most of the time. If you actually take the time to see my picks and watch the race immediately I think you will see this. Not just look at results. I put 4th or better to give some kind of quality for you to see. If I just threw darts I assure you it would be much worse. I'm not trying to come off as ajerk or anything. But I know what I know about the subject, and If we spent some time on it 2gether I would show you things you never thought of. Yes, Iam proud of my program and it works for me. and that's all I need to be happy. If you look at fridays long shot day you can see that I know what I am doing ! Anyway i appreciate your thoughts and Let's all just try to get along.!!

Regards,
Ultimate Selector!

Ult,

I'm not really sure what you're saying here. Yes I saw your screen shot. When you say you don't know of anyone who can handicap soley using the toteboard, are you including yourself in that, or saying you're the only one you've met who can do so? My only other question is, what data is examined by your program other than toteboard numbers in various formulations? Broadly speaking, in looking at the toteboard exlusively, it occurs to me that there are two main types of information available. The first being the relationship between various pools, win vs place vs exacta etc. etc. The second being the movement of odds and money within a given pool over the course of betting and the changes that take place during the betting period.

The whole point of toteboard watching is attempting to follow the "inside" or "smarter" money, however one sees fit to identify it, because obviously you're not doing any fundamental handicapping yourself, so you're looking for clues that point you to where the smartest money in the pool is so that you can jump aboard so to speak.

If you want to think I'm king of the hill I guess but I just enjoy doing this. I am not trying to sell anybody anything! And I will Not ask. That's because there is nothing to be sold. This is entertainment and work. It keeps me honest and I love the challange! can you understand that? I just love it!
I have also listed my ROI everyday Since last Sunday! if you want a cummulative total then just add them up and divide by the number of days. That's all you need to do. I can handle all the records and numbers you want from me that no problem. I keep all records anyway. I am not scared to post them. This is becuase I am true and genuine about who I am and what I do. I'm not trying to pull one over on anyone. I just wish you could appreciate the work I do to post all of this and still be able to handicap the races. I try to give people an insight as to what it like everyday when you do it day in and day out All day, not just for a couple of hours. I am also am keeping myself sharp and I work on different things as I do all this. Thats why I make commentaries on my threads so you can get an idea of my thought process. Kind of like a reality show from me here in the forum. Iam also sure that there are many people who do enjoy viewing as by the comments and e-mails I get. There are only about 5 or 6 guys that don't get it. But hopefully we can change that around!

as far as my name is concerned. There is a story that goes with that. The very 1st program I wrote for my note book computer in 1991 is called "The Ultimate Selector!" It's not an egotistical thing. It was my first baby! Know what I mean? Hey I'm an easy goin guy here. I don't think you see me conduct myself that way in here. Only if I have to defend myself then I will call them out and let them bring their game . I don't go looking for drama. I don't like dealing with it. But I will so I can be understood. I just think it's alot of wasted energy. I mean maybe I do have something to offer someone who wants to know or learn. I wish the best for all!!

Respectfully,
Ultimate Selector!

This is too difficult to expalin in the forum here. But the way you are stating what you think I do is completely wrong! I will be happy to discuss this with you one on one. Or even on the phone sometime but don't prejudge that you know what I do cause I guarantee you it's not that simple and you would be wrong in your analsys.

US, I did a week-long thing - twice - once I was ahead 8% and the other I was behind but I wasn't able to be here while the races were going off so I had to stick to the plays if they were 20/1 or 1/5 which sucked because anyone with a couple of nuts and a brain could figure out which to bet on and which weren't worth the risk. I said all that to say this...

I think it's a great idea you have going here...I wished I had the time to do it but oh well. I'll post selections when I can - not EVERYDAY but at least 3 times a week or so on average probably (may be a little conservative).

Alls I can say is no matter what the outcome was / is...hats off to you for taking the time to do it. I don't think people realize how much extra time it really does take to do this. So with that being said...keep on a knocking and good luck.

One day when I am off, we'll have to do a "live wagering heads up." I think ot would be fun, plus it would be my honor to do it against someone as seasoned as you are in the sport (probably many times what I am, 3 months now I think). Let me know...I would however prefer a Thursday or Friday lol.

Not saying I'm better, just thinking it would be fun and a challenge for me anyway but not so much for you (I suck at this here lately).

Also, I know some people tried this about a month ago or two and it went bad but this would be different, a friendly match. US and myself have no bad blood, that I am aware of, between us.

I don't think I ever said you were trying to sell anything. That may have been someone else....

I was just throwing out some reasons why people may be reacting to you as they are....take it from me....I've been watching this place for about 7 years now....

Aight, I think you know I work on call and can't lay-off to play a game so we'll have to work around my screwed-up schedule if it's even possible. Looks like Tuesday then maybe Wednesday, if not Wednesday, we'll be able to get back at it for Friday and maybe Saturday. Should be fun though. I'll pm you when I know more about my schedule so we can get it rolling.

For now though, plan on Tuesday and possibly Wednesday(???) or Friday/Saturday(???). I wished I could tell you more but I honestly don't know either.

It's coming....
