Does anyone out there have some data on what the average place price is for different odds. I, of course, know that the price is dependent on the amount bet on the two horses who come in and the amount of the pool, but I was working on something and wondered if anyone had something like this in their database:

something like:

8-5 average place price 3.10
4-1 average place price 4.50

I'm making those up!

Any info would be much appreciated

Dave,

Do you mean average place price for off odds in the win pool?

Yes. for example, if a horse was 3-1 in the win pool, what was the average place payoff?

Dave,

I just dumped 14000 races into my database (testing an importer) and can use those. I don't have an automated tool to supply that type of data but it is fairly easy to run a few out manually. Any particular odds range? Any constraint on tracks ? any other conditions?

Field size would be a big factor for that I bet...

Wow, thanks. No restrictions on tracks or anything. As game theory says field size would be important, but I'll live without it. Just need a basic idea.As far as odds ranges maybe just need the low odds ranges-say

under 1-1 (0.05-0.95)
1.00-1.45
1.50-1.95
2.00-2.45
2.50-2.95
3.00-3.45
3.50-3.95
4.00-4.45
4.50-4.95

if that's not too many?

Thanks, Bill, I owe you one!

Thanks for posting Dave on the average place and show prices based on win odds.

Not to be greedy (ok, i'm greedy), but I am curious as to the effect of number of horses in the races to these odds. For example, a 2/1 win odds on your chart equates to 3.66 for place.

I was just wondering if a horse was 2/1 in a 5 horse field versus 2/1 in a 12 horse field how would that alter the general average place price. I'm sure it is an easy adjustment, but my math skills are limited I'm afraid.

Thanks,

Secretariat,

I think you would be missing the point here... the bigger issue would be what the odds are on the lowest-priced horses in the field. I would suggest that in this case, that is more important than field size.

For example, a 6/1 horse will probably pay more (to place or show) in a race where the favorite is 5/2 than in a race where the fav is 4/5.

Dave

PS: I'm sorry, but I just do not have time to build and run said query now. This is not a query that is easy to get to within our software.

Is the price of the horse that actually comes in second .Meaning the horse that is 6/1 to win but places. That is different than the horse that is 6/1 and wins.

Here's an oldie, but a goodie post. I was wondering if Dave (or anyone else) have an update on this info. Since this is 5 years old - with the advent of net pool pricing in the meantime, I was wondering if this has changed much.

Thanks
