Anyone handicap the 10th at Laurel today -- March 18th.

#7 won at 15/1. He was claimed for $25,000 in his last race. He got about a 55 day layoff. Today he is entered in a $60,000 stakes and goes wire to wire one second faster than he has ever run before. Plus his pace times today were as fast as he had ever run before. I would think that a horse who runs a quick pace would not typically finish one second faster than he has ever done. Maybe he just really needed the freshening up.

Also, the trainer won at a 17% rate last year. This year he is winning at a 35% rate. Is this a typical move for him?

Thoughts?

He is a sprint specialist who has won 30% off the claim and 25% on
a short layoff last 3 yrs. thru Feb. 2006

Here's a couple of stats on him, according to my handy DRF Simulcast Weekly.
You need this reference close by to help spot those types!

sprints 118/549

off claim 14/52

L/O 45-120
days 45/179

Murph,

Thanks a lot! Is Simulcast weekly available online or only in paper format?

Any other good trainer stats that you know of?

It's a print product, cost the same as a form at HOO, $5. You can subscribe online and see examples of the format and reports in it. It has trainer profile interviews, pedigree articles by Lauren Stich and a handicapping article. A week or so ago James Quinn updated his graded stakes standards for contenders.

They do a stakes review for US and Foreign racing and a diary for the major
tracks running, that includes a daily report on the runners and conditions down to weather AND wind with a horse to watch list.

For every track running they post a track diagram, winners book, trainer and jockey standings and stats for a 3 yr period on trainers and a beyer par chart for all of the class levels that were run that week. The winners book is a list of each race in running order. It lists race conditions, running times, Beyer for the race, company line and odds with the winning jockey, trainer and sire.

Oh yeah, ALL of the charts are in there too. If you can read that sort of material for enjoyment that is. :D
