format . restore and now trouble

this has happened twice to me, once i decided to format my brother's emachine. i restored, installed netzero, and began getting messages that my computer was in a bad way from various sites like fixitnow, patchupdate,dlpatch, etc. he took his computer to someone who repaired.
i just today formatted and restored my gateway, installed netzero, and bingo same damn messages. every two to three minutes, another message proclaiming something bad will happen to my computer unless i go to their site and download some patch. How do i stop this and who is responsible for this
invasion of privacy? The commonality is netzero!
