Gambling halls, inside tracks or not, have something in common with church design- crowded mean comradery and mutual psychological support. Regardless of the actual crowd size, the the more crowded it LOOKS the better. That is why online betters are on this forum!
Building and expansion are a positive step as long as the place starts filling. Actually being small is ok as long as it has the correct ambience and components and no negative distractions.
A business has to look the part to attract the crowd that will be paying customers. If Stonach is going for the exclusive rich-person crowd than he will build the type of place executives will approve of; but without knowing who is currently being drawn to it the racetrack is clueless. I have only heard of 1 (DRF) survey of on-track patronage. With the Rewards cards the tracks are merely trying to get bodies in there. They are clueless as to who their current or potential customers are or how to attract them!
Examples- Go (racing-too-young-before your-bones-mature) Baby! Go!; Who (what # do you want to wild guess at) do you like today?; Yums! (that horse below the sign in the starting gate that just banged its head and tossed the rider sure will make tasty dog food!).
So now they are desperately trying to steal old ladies from the Indian Casinos so they can walk a long ways to the entrance and then walk a long ways to the machines to bet other than on horses.
Let me know when busloads of bingo players begin being delivered to the tracks. Then I will revise my post! B-14, I-29, N-35, G-55, O-69; BINGO! Go collect your winnings for the simulcast bingo game at the teller window and be sure to tell them the track, game#, customer#, and type of bet (Blackout, W,Picture frame, Or single line!LOL!!
The best thing about going to the track is outdoor open space, grass, dirt, animals (The country-in-the-city-look), and exercise. Let them figure out how to sell that and the customers will return and bring newbies.

A new Bloodhorse article blames live racing tahking on "weather"! 147 days cancelled due to weather. How many was Katrina? What was the decrease in western and southern states?

who knew, when it was built, that the majority of people would bet from their homes?

... or their cell phones?

I'm thinking of opening a YouBet mobile acct. I'm violating the law (according to my Attorney General) if I bet over the internet from my home in Connecticut. (I can call a live operator and place and legally place a bet, though. Go figure.)

With YouBet mobile, I'll just drive across the state line to New York and place my bets. Maybe once in awhile I'll even feel disobediant and drive up to Hartford to the State Capital Building and stand outside the AG's office with my cell phone and place a bet with YouBet mobile. :p

That's disappointing. I bet nobody from NY places wagers over the internet.

Since I"m not a NY resident, maybe I'll just get a slap on the wrist if I get caught using my cell phone to place bets. :D

That is truly tragic that NY State screws NYRA both ways. First the government restricts NYRA from taking bets over the internet, then NY State does not enforce its internet law concerning AMERICATAB/YOUBET. Finally NYRA has to face tooth and nail competition from the local government political patronage mill OTB's. NY state has given YOUBET/AMERICATAB huge competive edges over NYRA, and even there own OTB's. All of this lost handle reduces the availble purse money and the quality of action. amount of revenue. This is an examble of poor government. We pays too much taxes to have such bush league representation. NYRA/OTB are losing dozens of players everyday to the internet but I don't think the political hacks have realized that yet. Internet wagering is also illegal in New York.
