I'm mainly an exacta player but it has often occured to me that I do mss out often on one horse that has already been noted and identified as a contender but I failed to use this horse in the win position.
I do not like the concept of boxing 3 or more horses in an exacta therefor I always have either one or two that I use routinly in the top position
A typical 3 horse combo would look like this on my tickets- AB/box , A/BC ,AB/BC . This covers ( in most races) the way I truly feel but it does continually short-change horse C.
In recent weeks I have been trying to compromise a little and USE horse C on top only in a very small Tri. My Tri tickets would be C/AB/AB. This bet can be equally useful weather C is short-priced or a longshot. If short-priced the outcome may be close to or better than the AB/AB combo and if C is a longshot, the price could be much better. Food for thought.
