I'm planning a three day excursion to Sin City later this year (yearly Nam vet reunion- we have 20 rooms reserved at the Golden Nugget) and naturally I want to wager a few sheckels on my favorite pastime-handicapping thoroughbreds. I'm checking out the Sports Books in Las Vegas on the www.vegas.com site. Any recommendations (or advice) from you punters who have been to Vegas lately on which are the best Sports Books?

I used to hang out at The Stardust, but they have gone back to the stone ages with their blanket regulation against computers... plus they have some of the rudest people hanging out in the sports book next to the horses.

Okay, so where to go then? If you like the older feeling layout -- guys writing results on the board and such -- then drift over to The Orleans (off the strip). For the clean-modern look -- where you'll be well taken care of by the waitresses -- I'd suggest Bally's (across from Caesar's).

Of course, you might want to check out the race book where you're staying... although I hear that it's tiny and the service isn't too hot either.

Enjoy Vegas...

Not every race book offers a Derby Future. Depending on whom you want to play, your best bet is to hit three or four comparing prices. There is a HUGE spread on some horses right now, so shop for the best price. I saw prices at Aladdin, Bally's (Caesar's, Rio, Hilton, Flamingo, Paris) and Wynn, and here's a couple of the differences between Wynn and Bally's:

Half Ours: (CD Weekend Future-20-1), Wynn-150-1, Bally's-50-1
Great Point: Wynn-150-1, Bally's-50-1
Fabled: Bally's-20-1, Wynn-100-1
Twisting Road: Bally's-75-1, Wynn-150-1

If you're looking for some big numbers, consider:

Presidential Cause: 100-1
Royal Legacy: 150-1
Beacon Shine: 125-1
Mantoloking: 200-1
Twisting Road: above
On Board Again: 150-1

Downtown choices are limited. Nugget,Fremont and El Cortez have small books and no individual TVs. Binions decent size but no individual TVs. Plaza has a large race book with a good number of individual TVs. Al

I like the remodeled book at Sams Town. Nice seating, plenty of big screens and a close snack bar. Stop by and say hello to Professor Gordon Jones. It is a fun book.

Haven't been to LV for years so I don't know if the "House Quenella" is still offered. The Stardust had this bet when I was there and I know several others did also. The HQ can be a great bet and a big advantage over Q's and Exactas offered on track.
You might look for a casino that offers this bet if it appeals to you. This bet is booked by the casino so if your a big player you may be limited on amount bet. Good Luck

The last I heard laptops were not allowed at Mandalay Bay properties but they are OK at Coast Casinos and Station Casinos. Sunset Station offers the twinQ so it is probably available at other Station casinos. Coast Casinos offer different gimmicks like a in-house pick 5. I like Coast Casinos since they seem to like horseplayers and they are not on the strip and they cater to locals.

Hey Guys-
Thanks for your input. I haven't been to Vegas since the Shavers-Holmes fight in 1972 and am interested to see how it has changed since then. Our group of Nam Vets have started finding each other since 2004 thanks to the internet. We pick a reunion site each year. It was Branson, Missouri last year.
I hope that Nevada is ready for us 'crazy" veterans!
