"In court papers filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Justice Department lawyers revealed that Google has refused to comply with a subpoena issued last year for the records, which include a request for 1 million RANDOM Web addresses and records of all Google searches from any one-week period."

Wow. Seems they could plead their case without all that. Kinda scary.

"Cryptology is making and breaking codes. It’s so cool. We make codes so we can send secret messages to our friends.
***And we try to figure out what other people are writing about by breaking their codes. It’s a lot of fun."

I do not know the specifics of the subpoena nor do I know what's kept in the Google data bases. However, knowing something about computers, data processing and data bases, it seems to me there's some middle ground that could supply the data without invading any one's privacy.

My simple interpretation is the Federal Government wants to go straight to the horses mouth to get some relevant statistics and URI's for porn.

I, myself, favor forcing sites that traffic in that junk to use the triple 'X' name.

How dare you say no to George W. Bush. Google will feel the wrath of this Administration. The evil doers at Google bettor be prepared to turn over their weapons of mass destruction. I hope George and DICK Cheney wiretap those punks. Let's make W. King in the next election.

I thought "his arrogancy" was already King. Hasn't he already shown his capabilities to be above the law ?
Perhaps we need no more elections, just have the supreme court appoint him as King. Think of all the tax dollars we can save by avoiding the elections. Maybe the court is awaiting Alito's confirmation. Ah one can only hope it is soon, there are many oppressive laws to be implemented.
After all Osama bin forgotten has poked up his ugly head again. Fear reigns again , with enough fear you can get the masses to agree to anything.

I heard today that both Yahoo and AOL have given the govt. their random searches. Boy, Big Brother is in full force now. Google is challenging the subpoena. Good for them.

MSN did as well. Don't give Google to much credit for thier unwillingness.

If and when (undoubtedly) Google gives up your Data, they fear a rash of "Govt free" search engines cutting into thier business.

The day Google gives it up.......Count on a rash of alternative search engines popping up.

No matter where you come down...and reasonable men can disagree.......This NSA wire Tap and now this, are slippery slops. That is why the view of "its only this and that" and "its to protect you" and "if your not doing nothing wrong you have nothing to fear"...............All those points have merit. In the end however, in order to restrain Govt, we must expose ourselves to things that only we (the individual) can protect (y) ourselves from. To rely on Govt to protect you from the Boogeyman (real or perceived) is the height of a dependent society.

This is wrong.

On this issue, the gov't has over stepped it's boundries.
This has zero to do with national security.

Bin Laden is threatening new attacks and the governement is upset by people (g)oogling boobs on the net.

How do we react to this - everyone, STOP using any service that gives in - yahoo, MSPBS, whoever. STOP using them for anything.
And tell them why.
