What are the fastest fractions you've ever seen?

I'm always intrigued to see really fast fractions, for some reason.
I noticed at Tampa Bay the other day when the 5f turf record was set, the quarter went in 20.77 and the half went in 43.33.

I thought it was pretty cool - I've never seen a sub-21 quarter before.
What's the fastest you've ever seen?

1/4,

Don't forget that the points of call and runups are weird at 5 and 5.5. What was the final time?

55.74 I think.

I saw a :42 or :42.1 half once, but the quarter was "only" :21 for that one.

On the downhill course at SA, they've gone 1:05.4 for the six-furlong split.

2000 Breeders Cup Sprint

Caller One laid down these fractions.
20.82 - 43.56 - 55.39

He may have gone even faster some time during his career?

Wonder if they will let him run in that 2f dash at Calder again this year. He did pretty good at it the last couple

Churchill has had some blazing 6f due to the long run up at 6f, sub 21.

Wasn't everything 20.x and 42.x when Russel Baze earned Hall of Fame Status at Golden Gate. That track was an Ice Rink. Even the routes went 22 and 44

A few years ago there was a horse running in No. Cal by the name of Santano. Blazing early speed, 20 and change opening quarters.

Who remembers Make Him Famous at Sacramento? I think he had the world record for a mile, although Dr. Fager he most certainly was NOT. Hoedown's Day set a world record at Bay Meadows that was so out of whack, it seemed about 1/16 of a mile short. I think for 8.5 furlongs, he went 1:38 & 2/5, when the mile record was, I don't know, maybe 1:34 & 2/5? Well, it turned out that the track was superfast because they had accepted some free soil from Jefferson School, while tweaking the track surface ( :bang: ), and when it rained, it became a quagmire. No, I mean a REAL quagmire. No racing for a while. I guess they just scraped it all off eventually.

Chinook Pass was boatloads the quickest thoroughbred I've seen. His connections, were at one time, trying to line up a match race with a champion quarterhorse.

Saw a 20-3 and 42-4 at Caliente in a 6f back in the '70s. Timed in fifths then. Caliente track played very fast then. Typical 6f time for cheap claimers was 1:08-2. Horse would win there in 1:08....come across the border to Del Mar (or whatever track was running in SoCal) to run against claimers who ran typical 1:10 to 1:11.....every one of them got bet down....some to under 2-1. This was before track adjusted speed figures were available to everybody. Maybe one out of twenty would win. Most wouldn't be in the money.

I seem to remember that several times during the Noor-Citation rivalries they went around 1:08 for a route and many of Fager's splits were downright nuts

in 2002 the fastest times were
2f 20.81 Baby Shark Calder
4f 43.60 Iza Twister Mohave COunty Fair

But, at least in Renton, Washington (old Longacres) he could strech that out to a mile. I was there for his LGA Mile with Pincay up and it was all over after 4 furlongs

Years ago there was a horse named Cool Frenchy who consitantly ran 20 & change quarters.
He went to Pomona and won the big stakes there wire to wire two years in a row. Paid over $20.00 to win. The public didn't bet him much do to the unknown trainer Frank Licklyter and his wife Mary. One year I had a filly in an early race at the Stockton Fair. As I entered the backside I ran into Frank & Mary. "Dan" he said, "we are going to win the feature race. No one can beat Cool Frenchy." Frank was the breeder of my horse which was named Native Adah. She was a maiden and both Frank and my trainer thought she could win. Frank knew I like to wager so he said "Today is your lucky day. I recommend a two hundred dollar win parley from Native Adah to Cool Frenchy" He was the breeder of both horses so he had a rooting interest. So I headed to the win windows early and made the bet. Native Adah won (the only race she ever won) and so did Cool Frenchy. On the way out of the races we stopped by the backside to see Frank and Mary and thank them. They were thrilled because they had won the feature race.
I want you to know we ate steak that night. Danny Holmes

Danny,

I've seen you listed as a trainer. Are you related to Joe Holmes, I guy I wish didn't have to ride, as it seems he is old enough to enjoy a nice retirement?

I am not a trainer-just a handicapper. No relation to any jockey. However, my father was a jockey in the 40's. Danny

When I think of real fast fractions, I think of Secretariet. A world record effort in the Belmont. I believe he ran every 1/4 mile faster than the previous?

If had been born with sprint speed, his shadow would have had to take a cab to keep up with him. ;)

that was his Derby, also a track record which still stands. His Belmont was as impressive but more "traditional" in more equal fractions

Fastest Derby fractions: 21 3/5 Stauch Avenger 1981
44.86 Songandaprayer (2001)
1:09.25 Songandaprayer (2001)
1:34 4/5 Spend A Buck (1985)
1:59 2/5 Secretariat (1973)

Secretariat's quarter mile fractions:
0:25 1/5
0:24
0:23 4/5
0:23 2/5
0:23

then the Belmont's fastest fractions:
Another Preview 23.0 (1991)
Secretariat 46 1/5
" 1:09 4/5
" 1:34 1/5
" 1:59 (FASTER than his Derby!)

I used to chart many races in a deceleration program called KGEN and his races were the ONLY ones with a POSITIVE slope. He "in effect" sprinted a MILE AND A HALF
