Curious to see a couple of things: how hard a campaign did he have, how many races over what period of time. How often did he run? And, did he ever run at HOL?

First race 9/4/59 at ATL as a 2YO -
1959 3-1-2-0
1960 9-8-0-0
1961 9-6-2-0
1962 12-6-4-0
1963 12-9-2-0
1964 11-5-3-0
1965 6-3-0-2
1966 1-0-0-0
life 63-39-12-2

Ran twice at HOL first in the L.A Hdcp. 5/23/64 placing 8th and in the Californian 6/6/64 placing 6th.

With a quick scan, looks like all others on the East coast. The only layoff lines appear at the end of each year.

They don't make 'em like they used to.

I might have seen Kelso at HOL with my mother and grand mother.

It seemed like he ran every saturday,he quickly became my favorite as a young hoseplayer not paying attention to VALUE.
He always paid under 2-1,but he was my favorite just the same.

hwnn.

Was struck by the close parallel of Kelso's career mark to another fine gelding's:

63: 39w-12p-2s ... Kelso
60: 23w-14p-2s ... SPOOKY MULDER!!! And he's only 8!!

Even Haskin would be embarrassed by that comparison.

Liten up. It was a simple comparison of numbers.

It could have been meant any " liter ".

Spooky's tough, but he'd have to go 16-for-3 to match Kelso. Heck, Kelso's another LITF, or another Easy Goer, even! :D

Learned tonight while watching W-T-W that du Pont rode Kelso foxhunting after he retired.

KELSO was saddled with MORE than 127 pounds in 31 different races!
How about SPOOKY MULDER?????

Interesting that we've got a live Kelso thread going on at the same time as a live Funny Cide thread. Gelding vs. gelding.

Kelso seems to have been in his prime as a 6 yo; Funny Cide over the hill.

Fig..

No comparison! I would estimate that Spooky Mulder consumed 127 pounds of carrots after his last 31 starts... So it's a wash.

So, you're backtracking now, and suggesting Spooky Mulder isn't as good as Kelso?

Who told you? Lemme guess.....Geno.

While not of the quality of Kelso, I wonder if anyone else is old enough to remember a fine gelding A G Vanderbilt had in the 50s, a son of Discovery named Find. I believe he raced up to age 11 and I remember seeing him run 2nd in the 1959 Hollywood Gold Cup as a 9yo. He won major races on both coasts, was a top miler and won the 13f Sunset in (I think) 1957.

A 10-year-old gelding named Bomber Bill won a Group 3 race in Australia last weekend. It was a 5f sprint, and his first race after a break of a couple months. He ran late, charging up the middle of the track to win in a photo. Before the race, he was walking through the paddock with his ears dancing and tail swishing. The horse just loves to run.

His workouts suggest that FC has some run left in him, but it looks to me like it's the competitive spirit that's gone.

I remember FIND. He used to race about the same time as FISHERMAN who was a CV Whitney horse. At Saratoga these two stakes winners were in adjacent barns. I remember the time period as much earlier than the late fifties as FISHERMAN was at his prime in 1953-54. And I know FIND raced in '53. Two pillars of the turf were the owners of these two horses - Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt owned FIND while Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney owned FISHERMAN. The latter won the Washington DC International among other stakes.

I just checked and Find was a foal of 1950. He spent his later years on the west coast. I remember Fisherman, he ran in Determine's derby. Remember the Hasty House entry of Sea O'Erin and Hasty Road? Sea O'Erin won a ton of races in Chicago later on.....memories!

Well... I like to think of the 'ol Spookster as kind of a 'modern day Kelso'... (And TLG... we can only HOPE that Geno was gelded early on... BTW, I'll give him your best if I see him at Hallandale tomorrow/Sat...)

And since this terrific thread is gelding-based, has everyone perused the 6 warhorses in Thursday's 6th at AQU? PJ Campo has imaginatively put together a 10f 'classic' for horses that started for $14K tag or below in 2004-05. Cold Blow Lane... Long Term Success... Stellianos... Halo Malone... Etc... It's great. More than 200 starts, 5 dozen wins, and over a $1mm in earnings between the six of them... And you say they don't make 'em like they used to...

Your dog is named Kelso because of the horse or the Vegas sports handicapper?
