People owe it to themselves to AT LEAST ONCE, to get a hold of one of Huey Mahl's simple explantions of pace and energy distribution (the originial idea behind Howard Sartin's methodology). In eloquent, simple language, he simply talks about lactic acid build up via exertion in a race and gives some very practical ideas for the reader to understand what he says.

I often don't think we realize the stress on the physiological systems these close to maximal exertions take out of these animals particularly in sprints. It is a purely theoretical explanation without data, but informative nonetheless.

I attended a seminar in 1951 conducted by Hugh Matheson and he taught us about pace figures, actually just the 2nd and final quarters. The splits were not shown in DRF Western Edition in those days and this info was not available to the public which was nifty. Hugh raved about Huey Mahl and I got his stuff, too. I can recommend it still.

I used to use his pace figs - can't remember what they were called, but you got a subsription and updates every week. They werre in the format of :

5 14 29
7 18 33
2 11 19

Low being best.

Very, very good numbers. Very good. Very good indeed.

I didn't realize pace handicapping or at least making pace figures went back that far. How did those numbers compare to todays?
