OpenOffice 2.0, the free office suite comparable to MS Office (and compatible with MS files) now has database functionality. Looks like it is compatible with Access and other common formats. Check it out:

What's the learning curve of a database for someone with no experience?

I'd like to be able to keep trainer stats and such in it.

The nice thing about open source software is that you can always find dozens of free tutorials to get you started. This is how I got CoRrUpTeD!

If you use a spreadsheet, you should be able to migrate towards a database.

Here are some links:

Andy,

I went from Zero knowledge of Access to importing files, writing queries, and exporting stuf in a week. Not to hard to grasp basics - the detailed stuff comes with familiarity - and I am about 5% into the full use of the damn thing so far, but it is so handy to use.

thanks for any advice you haveJust select "windows", doesn't matter where you download from. If you don't have Java installed, then select the one that says (with JRE)...

I downloaded and installed OpenOffice 2.0 last night. Although I have many years of programming experience, I don't have much actual DB knowledge beyond understanding basic concepts.

Am I correct in assuming that I will need to extract the data I need to populate my database from TSN files? I have lots of these but many of the 1635 fields are not needed. I'm assuming I'll need a quick 'n dirty program to extract what I want.

Also, would I load the results (XRD files) as a separate table within my database?

Geez, I need to bone up on basic terminology and DB techniques...

Thanks,
Lou G
