Possibly the greatest horseracing book ever. Number one, the guy can write. He is up there with Runyon, Murray and Bukowski. It is a story about thoroughbred racing in America. It has a detailed history of the sport interspersed with stories about the tracks, their owners, and famous races. The author starts describing a famous race like the one with Buckpasser, Damascus and Dr. Fager all in the same race, or John Henry at the first Arlington Million or Cigar at the Pacific Classic. He describes the particular race in segments as a setup to include the tracks and the people that made them. It is very entertaining and has some stirring moments. A great gift for any horseplayer or that partner of a horseplayer not quite as fond of the handicapping but loves the sport. I bought mine at Amazon.
