Watching the races at the top of the lane, there is a widening of the strech ( a bulge OUT if you will) so that the field has to go wider than if the rail were continuous.....Never saw that one before.

Is that for starting gate for routes?

nowhere near the gate placement. It is as if the powers that be wanted the entire field to fan out before running. If a rider hugges the rail, he would have to wide to but could then DROP over to the narrower part of the lane. I think they have a website and I am going to look it up.

You can try emailing Nick Mordin at his website nickmordin.com. He used to live in S. Africa and bet horses for a living there. He kept speed figures there, and I know he knows the idiosycracies of each course.
