Is this a first? I don't remember them ever running on the grass this late. I am sure the 6 inches of snow forcasted tonight and a high of 24 on Thursday will put an end to that for the year though

This year was different for a couple reasons, besides the weather being dry and warm, in that the inner opened November 30th, which is on the early side, and with Belmont staying open a week longer for the BC, the turf course had only been used for four weeks when the inner opened. Usually it is six...and at this time of year that can beat things up fairly easily.

They also ran on the turf when the inner dirt was extended in the past, at least I think they did. I know it has been done a few times before.

I know it has been done a few times before.I'm highly skeptical that they ever ran on both simultaneously in the spring. It just makes no sense. Think about it. One only stays open late due to cold and/or rain and the other could only open early due to unseasonably warm temperatures ( and probably lower levels of rain ).

Sounds like it could only happen on the internet.

I'd have to say its come to an end as of yesterday's and tonight's predicted snows. I think I heard them say it was in such good shape (as opposed to last year) that they would keep running on it as long as the weather behaved. You also notice they have been runing optional claimers and maiden claimers for state breds? I don't remember seeing these before, but they seem to be fairly popular with the entry box, so you get no issues from me with them.

Scroll down to "(12/7) GAME VICTORY" and you'll see that in 2000 they ran their last grass race on that December date.

In 2001 the last grass race was run on Dec 2.

On another topic, there is a 1mile and 5 furlongs race scheduled for tomorrow, is that rare?

The Gallant Fox just after Christmas time is also 1 5/8 m. There may be starters allowences of that length too, but yes, it is pretty rare

There is little to no chance tomorrow's race will remain on the turf. Wednesday's entries were drawn Saturday, before it snowed Saturday night, and we just got a little more last night.

I think it's safe to say turf racing is over for 2005 in NY.
