Wireless card vs. USB adapter

I think the slot where my wireless card goes might be broken or damaged on my laptop.

Is using a USB adapter instead of a card less effective in connecting in wi-fi networks? Are the speeds lower?

No. The bottleneck is in the connection speed which is way slower than the USB transfer rate.
