View Full Version : EPIC EVENT. NEW ORLEANS/GULF COAST
short on time and words. going to try and size some pictures.
quick version:
I've been in New Orleans. I'm doing structural anyalsis here. i have no energy or aptitude for anything beyond that. i'll be back in a couple or weeks with more.
.
difficult to see. there is a (red)2001 pontiac sundance in this home. also this home is in the middle of a street. hydrostatic energy......inundation. (vertical flooding) thats one thing.... horizontal flooding another. its powerful and baffles the human mind with its effects. there is also a human remain in this structure and I'm preparing a report on the methodology of demolition that provides both safety to the contractor and diginity to the remains.

They used to be better, but there's still a few good ones, just let me know.
close up... you can now see the wheels of the vehicle over my shoulder.
A 2000 sqft home, moved 1300 yards, picked up a vehicle along the way and parked it in its living room
over and out, back in a week
one of the many homes, off its foundation, sitting in the middle of the road. still! 11/11/05.
more time I will break this down.
glad I came. contributing. hard job. can't grasp it till you see it.
beyond description.
pa. the password. shoot it over PM.

I saw 60 Minutes tonight. The report said that of 200,000 homes in New Orleans, about 120,000 will have to be demolished.

that's incorrect. uninhabitable. 120 thousand are uninhabitable. the structural intergrity is not comprimised. We've deemed about 4000 homes total loss.
We've just begun the lower 9th ward and that number will probably double this week. The 9th is still shut off to the public. It looks like a Cruise missile hit it. I'd like to explain what happen here but it is fruitless. Pictures, words,or TV can't do it. Until you see it, walk it, touch it, hear it, it is impossible to understand the magnitude of the devastation.
its in my head.......it something like I could never picture or grasp. I'm in the field at sunup, looking at it till sundown, 7 days a week, 11 hours in the field, 4 hours in a meetings sifting through the days data, 4 hours of drinking, 4 of sleep, back up, back at it.
i got lucky and got near the internet today and son of a bitch I don't have my disk with the pictures on it...
I put up one that I already had put in this thread. but not being limited to 30K its a much better view of the scene here. I will , as soon as time allows, put a whole bunch of great pictures in the Misc Gallery

That's all just very incredible. Hard to comprehend. I've heard that there are other areas that virtually untouched. I have a friend whose in-laws live in Slidell, LA, which was basically taken off the map. There little neighborhood was pretty much unscathed.
What a shame.......what a town New Orleans was....
