Monday, October 15, 2001 MONMOUTH & MEADOWLANDS APPLY FOR 309 DATES IN 2002
The Meadowlands and Monmouth Park have submitted date requests for 2002 that will total 141 thoroughbred and 168 standardbred programs.
The two New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority tracks will satisfy the requirements of the recently approved Off Track Betting and Account Wagering legislation by opening Monmouth Park earlier and scheduling six-day a week live racing.
Monmouth Park, which traditionally began its summer meet on Memorial Day weekend, will now open on May 11 and run through September 1 for a total of 88 racing dates. Monmouth's schedule will be Wednesdays through Sundays in May [plus May 27 and dark May 29], June and July through July 20, then Wednesdays through Mondays for the balance of the meet.
The Meadowlands' thoroughbred schedule will begin September 2 and run through November 2, Mondays through Saturdays, for a total of 53 dates. The track will be dark on September 3.
Harness racing at the Meadowlands will span January 4 through August 3 plus a Fall meet from November 8 through December 7.
For the Fall meet, the Meadowlands will apply for the two and three-year-old divisions of the Breeders Crown series.
The schedule for the harness meet will span Tuesdays through Saturdays in January; Wednesdays through Sundays in February, March [dark March 31], April and May [dark May 26 and open May 27] and Tuesdays through Saturdays in June, July and through Hambletonian Day, August 3. In the Fall, the schedule will run Wednesday through Saturday nights [dark for Thanksgiving on November 21].
The total of 309 dates for the NJSEA tracks is the highest since they ran 313 live programs in 1994.
The New Jersey Racing Commission will consider the requests for dates from the tracks at its November 20, 2001 meeting in Trenton.
