The next to last Saturday of racing in the Fall Meet at Churchill Downs bids to be an eventful one as racing fans will be attracted to the historic track and simulcast centers across North America to chase a track record Pick Six carryover pool of $1,694,336.41 - the largest carryover pool at Churchill Downs since the multi-race wager was first offered at the track in 1984.

Fans of Churchill Downs racing failed to take down the Pick Six for a ninth consecutive day on Friday, which pushed the carryover pool into uncharted territory at the Louisville track. The carryover pool heading into Friday totaled $701,585, which was the third largest in track history. Fans wagered a total of $1,636,668 on the Pick Six prior to Friday’s races and, of that total, $994,275 went into the wager’s major pool

The Pick Six is a minimum $2 wager that requires patrons to correctly select the winners of six consecutive races and Friday's wager was conducted on races 5-through-10. There were live tickets on four horses heading into the 10th race - but none contained the eventual winner, Dogwood Stable’s Captain Slew, and the pool carried over for at least another day. The current carryover pool started with the Nov. 8 racing program.

Consolation tickets for those who selected five of the six winners were worth $3,683.60.

The newest carryover pool surpassed the previous Churchill Downs record of $855,542 that was in place on May 6, 2004. That pool included wagering that started on Kentucky Derby Day (May 1) and grew over a total of three racing days. It also ranks among the largest carryover pools in U.S. racing history. The American record carryover of $1,830,146 was recorded on Jan. 23, 1991 at Santa Anita on the fifth day of that carryover.

The previous record carryover pool at Churchill Downs was part of what still stands as largest total Pick Six pool in its history. That 2004 pool grew to $2,891,518 during its three-day run before the Pick Six was finally hit on May 6. The largest Pick Six pool in U.S. racing totaled $7,302,848 at Santa Anita on March 3, 2004.

The largest Pick Six payout at Churchill Downs was the $1,168,136 collected by a single ticket holder on June 25, 2003.

The wager will again be offered on races 5-10 on Churchill Downs’ Saturday racing program. Post time for Saturday’s first race is 12:40 p.m. (all times EDT) and the 5th race, the first of the Pick Six races, is set to start at approximately 2:36 p.m. The track’s admission gates will open at 11 a.m.

Early program changes for Saturday’s program will be available on the Churchill Downs Web site at www.churchilldowns.com or by telephone at (502) 636-4404. Early changes should be posted on both sources by approximately 7:30 a.m.
