Charlestown, race 1, playing #4, JoeFromTexas. The horse is a first time starter by a trainer who hits 24% with same and likes to prey on soft fields at this particular track. The horses with starts are abysmal to mediocre, and the other first time starters have trainers who aren't known to fire first time out. The downside is that it won't get off at much of a price (few of Salzman's winners do).

#3, which was 7/2 when I posted the play, got bet down with the simulcast money. It won fairly easily. #1 never got involved.

Once or twice a week I try Charlestown or Mountaineer. The horse I try has to be good odds and have a strong chance to win. #7, which usually breaks on or near the top, broke last and stayed there, while a horse with very little early speed had a six length lead ten steps out of the gate (in a 4.5f race) and won going away----at 40-1.

The jockeys at these tracks should all wear party hats and carry streamers with them when they ride. Then when the eighth best early horse wires the field, they can all throw their streamers at the crowd and shout "Surprise!" as they ride by.

The horse got bet down to 10-1. It fought for the lead, was still on top entering the stretch, but gave way thereafter.

The horse had the worst of it the whole race, having to go three-wide on the first turn and fanned four wide (more like seven paths) on the far turn. After all that, it still managed to finish second by a bit over a length. At least I had a small exacta with the 2-1 winner. That paid $64.00

The horse got off at 21-1. It fought with the 7/5 winner until the upper stretch, but couldn't keep up, while holding on for second.

Meadowlands, race 7, playing #2, currently 18-1, but probably going down to about half that.

Horse got bet down to 12-1. I realize that the horse doesn't have much early foot, but the jockey still waited about an hour too long to get the horse started. Once it got under way, it made up a lot of ground, but way too late to get more than third.

CT, race 8, playing #8, currently 8-1, will probably go down a ways.

The horse broke in a tangle and was ridden to get position on the first turn. It showed nothing after that and probably wouldn't have if it broke cleanly.
