Man I hate that. Is there a charity or organization that helps "retired" horses??

If you know a legit one that accepts contributions I would be grateful if you post it.

thanks,

Joe

I adore horses, also; but isn't any slaughter a gruesome, messy business? We pretty much have to eat meat. Shall we tell the French, et al., which meat they can eat? May not work.

Thoroubred Retirement Foundation......I don't want to list websites, as I don't want to violate any rules here, but you can easily look them up.

I'll do it:

NTRA has a listing of some organizations.
AAEP has good articles on the subject.
Last I heard just over 500 racehorses per year are slaughtered.
IMHO, the better horses are checked the less will get non-repairable injuries. How many of the cheaper stock get complete cardiac testing or periodic thorough testing of legs? I suggested previously each circuit should have good ultrasound, X-ray, and cardiac testing vans for free use by trainers and vets of racers and ponies.

Old Friends is a great organisation. Not very old and still on the small side it is run by the very enthusiastic Michael Blowen. Located in Midway about 15 mins drive from Keeneland and one hour from Churchill. Visitors are encouraged to stop by. Not many more pleasant ways to spend part of a morning before going to the track. Have taken a few guests there myself who have all enjoyed the experience immensely.

A great link on the site allows you to purchase books and 15% of the purchase price goes to the retirement home..alot of thanks to Amazon.
