Bruno suggests New York identify racetracks’ franchisee by May (http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/todaysnews/newsview.asp?recno=58038&subsec=1)
The New York Racing Association’s franchise to operate the state’s three major Thoroughbred racetracks is not set to expire for another 26 months, but State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno (R-Brunswick) is set to propose the state identify NYRA’s successor early in 2006. Thoroughbred Times (http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/todaysnews/newsview.asp?recno=58038&subsec=1)

It seems to this outsider that NOBODY knows what the hell is going on in NY racing.

Here we have a majority leader who is now looking to speed up the franchise process, but he doesn't know with whom, or how, or why, or exactly when....he just knows it should happen sooner, and he's holding press conferences to bestow this very important concept to us.

Nevermind his son is/was a paid lobbyist for Magna in NY state....I wonder if his next press conference will be to simply hand over the keys to Frank.

Frank Stronach already has the "keys", he just has to put it in the lock.

Frank and politicians go together.

Frank shoevels it, pols buy it.
Frankie getting NYRA would be a disator.Franky is a disgrace to this sport and has far more to hurt it that help it. He the equivalent of a rapist who tips his victims.
Anyone ever hear of a nationwide organized (and successful) boycott of NYRA?
I understand the people of Florida love the guy, but aren't these the same people who COULDN'T FIGURE OUT A PAPER BALLOT?

If I knew you in person, I would make you a SUBSTANTIAL wager that Magna will NOT get the franchise. It may not be NYRA running the show, but it won't be Magna either....

Having left New York State 35 years ago for the land of milk and honey I really have no concern as to what happens to NYRA. If comments in the past about Frank Stronach have offended you, they come from general observations as to how Mr. Stronach operated here in South Florida, how he manipulated local and state officals for the rebuilding of Gulfstream, how he manipulated local and state officials to have slots placed in Gulfstream which is in Broward County with sufficient amount of votes and Calder in Dade County was left in the dust with insuffiient amount of votes for slots. He will spare no expense to obtain what he wants.

Offended me? Not in the least. What I'm offended by is the fact that Magna can't seem to make any money, just like NYRA (which is hampered by an inadequate business model). It's stock price is stagnant, and has been for 3 or 4 years, which shows I am not alone in my total apathy towards the company.

Sooner or later, throwing around all that money is going to get Frank into trouble....his investors sure don't sound happy to date....

NYRA is a whole different ballgame from a Great Lakes Downs, or even a Gulfstream Park. If Magna is awarded this franchise, then you can rest assured the system is 100% corrupt. They've done nothing in the past, nor have shown any initiative towards the future, that would lead me to believe they deserve the franchise.

Worn, maybe, but large, fer sure!

Why do so many people go to Gulfstream Park?

"Honey, what should we do today?"
"Hmmm. We could swin in a shark infested ocean."
"Or we could fish in the Everglades, where the aliigators are being eaten by the snakes."
"We could lay on the beach under the hole in the ozone layers and burn to a crisp."
"We could help nail up plywood for whatever hurricane is bearing down on the coast."
"Hey, want to go step in horse poop and lose yer ass?"
"Cool! We're there!"

All of the above has some truth to it, my only salvation is within the next 60 days you will be shoveling your first snow fall and I will be in the land of milk and honey. I am not certain that Frank Stronach is the answer for NYRA, but it is apparent something has to happen.

It is obvious that Magna has some financial troubles, but unlike NYRA they will not have to sell some fine Art work, acreage or face the possibilty of going "going belly up" by the end of the year.

Who's got more money than a casino?

Has anyone tracked how much money the casinos have contributed to the campaigns of the major NY pols involved? That might be interesting.

Don't be so certain. Each quarter things seem to be getting worse. I know the future is slots, and maybe it will turn things around for a bit, but don't be so sure....
