VINTON, La. -- The Delta Downs race track and casino was damaged by wind and water from Hurricane Rita, and it is unclear when the complex will reopen.

Delta Downs was scheduled to begin an 88-day thoroughbred meet Oct. 21. No damage estimate was issued, and contractors have begun repairing the damage, according to the track's owner, Boyd Gaming Corp. of Las Vegas.

Not surprised, since Delta is in Vinton, between Beaumont and Lake Charles, right in the hurricane's path.

Nearby Evangeline got lucky, in a way, with the two hurricanes. One hit to the east and the other to the west. Neither one did a lot of damage to Evangeline, according to the track.

Good thing because EVD lost enough time already this year when they had to shut down to re-do the surface.
