New track opens on Friday, anyone know anything about this place? It is in New Mexico and has slots, that is about all I know.

Brand new and built from the ground up. Originally R.D.Hubbard (formerly of Hollywood Park) and rogue investor Shawn Scott were competiotors to get this racetrack license. I think Hubbard prrevailed.

Sounds like the name of a porn star. Zia Park? Maybe a relative of Chan Ho.

1. Mostly quarters??? or appaloosas???

2. You know how to find a great porn name. Take the name of your first dog and the street you grew up on. It works. Mine would have been "Sugar Shaw."

Sunland Park is the track near El Paso. Hobbs is a few hundred miles east north east of there and not really near any civilization in Tx. It's about 100 miles southwest of Lubbock.

I believe Zia Park was the poster girl for the Wildcat Bookstore, on all fours and looking back over her shoulder, just above the line, "Parking In Rear."

They tossed the 5% place payout on purses less than $9999.99 for Jockeys. Flat fee $65.00 bucks. $50.00 for show

Any purse over 14K grand bumps the mount fee to $55 dollars. 4 mounts a day will earn you a grand a week. I think a grand a week in New Mexico goes a long way.

Bumped owners place cut to 22%

Long window for entries. Entering Sunday for Friday.

If you've run for $3500 or less and not finished better than 4th, you cannot run here. That is probably to keep the Arizona horseman from shipping in weak stock from Turf Paradise , where 1/2 the card is $3500 or less.

No maidens older than 5 either.

People complain about NY bred races at NYRA. ZIA is carding four New Mexico bred races everyday. 2YO New Mexico maiden Fillys going 350 yards for 15 thou!

Bruce Rimbo (I think that's his name) is the president of the park, and he was a guest on the Thoroughbred Connection radio show last Sunday. You can listen to the show at the World Talk Radio web site, which is easy to google.

If I remember right, they have 600 slots at the facility and they were able to install the slots a year before opening to help build up the purses for their racing season. They will have somewhere around 60-80 percent thoroughbred racing mixed in with quarter horses.

Tippy Depot -- not too good.

I also heard another good way -- your first pet and your mother's maiden name.

Of course the purses are finanaced by the slot machines. The idea of Ria Park seems to be to keep the purse money in-state. They've probably learned from Sunland and other places, where the big trainers would get most of the purse money, and they don't want that to happen at their track.

Ria is close to Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, and Amarillo, which is apparently where they plan on getting most of their business. They're not far from El-Paso, but they wouldn't get much casino business from there, since Sunland is only about 15 miles from El Paso.

$1K a week is the gross, right? Subtract he agent's cut and do the jocks have a valet out there they have to tip?

And as private contractors the jocks have no health insurance either.

Doesn't sound like a lot of money to me....

Zia ParK:

Both RD Hubbard and Ed Allred ( Los Alamitos ) are behind the place, thus I would look for a program similar to Ruidoso

You will see the word ZIA all over New Mexico
Below is a description I found:

New Mexico's insignia is the Zia Sun Symbol, which originated with the Indians of Zia Pueblo. Its design reflects their tribal philosophy, with its wealth of pantheistic spiritualism teaching the basic harmony of all things in the universe. Four is the sacred number of Zia and the figure is composed of a circle from which four points radiate. These points are made up of four straight lines of varying length and personify the number used most often by the giver of all good gifts. To the Zia Indian the sacred number is embodied in the earth with its four main directions; in the year with its four seasons; in the day with sunrise, noon, evening and night; in life with its four divisions; childhood, youth, adulthood and old age. Everything is bound together in a circle of life and love without beginning, without end.

Zia is a mixed meet, quarters and throughbreds. They had wiener dog racing the first day, if you want to include that.

Oh yeah: Butch Norton.
