That dude could really ride! It will be interesting to see how he performs off the extended layoff.

I guess what I don't like about the entire situation is that it is yet another example in racing of rules being completely ignored. All too often in the game rules seem to be more a matter of convenience and less something that must be steadfastly followed. It's all part of the long road that has brought the game to where it is today. The bottom line is, if there is a rule that states a jockey agent cannot also exercise horses in the morning, then Angel Cordero simply cannot do both. If he is unhappy, and insists on working horses in the AM, he should give up being an agent. It is as simple as that.

I loved Cordero as a rider, and wish there was a clone of him riding today, but this has nothing to do with that. It's more about his unfair ( and possibly " illegal " ) advantage. It was mentioned to me earlier of how Angel had to " give up " being an agent while at Keeneland, because he was working horses for Todd, but we really know that is a " wink wink ", and while perhaps he didn't get his usual 25% of Johnny's earnings, the chances that he got 0% are pretty minimal. How can racetracks expect anyone to follow all the rules when they themselves selectively follow them?

If I am wrong, and there is no rule in NY that strictly prohibits any of this, then I apologize. But from what I understand that won't be necessary.

Great post, Andy, something you won't read about anywhere else.

As a side: I've always been amazed at the general lack of attention paid to agents and their practices, and how so few players realize how of an impact they can have on the races.

Maybe Cordero can force the favorite Extremely Wide, like he did to Affirmed, and pick up a win on his last ride. It would certainly be representive of his "style".

Cordero's return looks like a day to remember

In a Thoroughbred racing year that has been a tad on the lackluster side, one of the most interesting dramatic developments is the fact that Angel Cordero - at age 62 - is going to ride in two stakes races at Philadelphia Park on Oct. 1 ("Cordero to ride for one day," Sept. 19).

Angel is surely one of the greatest riders of our time, and, as the Kentucky hardboots say - or used to say - he is as game as Dick Tracy.

I, for one, will be fascinated with his two-race comeback.

Looks like his two-race comeback has been trimmed to only one. When the Philly overnight came out yesterday, he was only named on Indian Vale in the Cotillion. Yes Yes Yes in the Gallant Bob was left open - no rider.

I dislike athletes who "retire" to much pomp and circumstance, aka Roger Clemens at Yankee Stadium, then "un-retire" to much pomp and circumstance, aka Clemens in Houston. Why don't we bring some oldies-but-goodies out of retirement, suit them up in their respective uniforms, and let them have at it again? Is this news? I can't get that excited over Cordero coming back for one ride. It's purely a ploy to get disaster relief donations and generate a lot of ink in the press. Why doesn't he just set up a booth at Philly and have people drop money in a cup? If Cordero was going to come back and ride FULL TIME, that would get my attention.

Seattle Slew's jock, Jean Cruguet claims that he is in better shape than Cordero.

Some other potential sponsors:

1. Preparation H - for those "saddle sores."
2. Geritol - for a little extra "oomph" down the lane

and of course

3. Viagra - just in case a good-looking female hotwalker comes sashaying over

Judging by how that horse ran (or didn't run), he probably would've made more money panhandling.

Watching the replay, I wouldn't say he gave the horse much of a chance. That was an ugly ride.
